bought a purple tang a week ago, he seemed to look ok. came home today and he has lots of white spots on him. so question is...

how do i properly treat him?

no other fish in tank seem to have it.

i have some Jungle Ick medication that the local wal-mart had. Says not to add to reef tanks with live rock.

so do i put him in a seperate tank and tret him with that for a day or two?

i have a 10 gal that will have to work for now.

Thanks for any help

after research, will a freshwater dip at proper temp for a few seconds cure this?

definitely don't add that to the tank, how big is the tang, 10g is really to small and hes gonna be in there for more then a day or two unless u want him to just keep catching it. Is it eating, if not goodluck.

he eats like a pig. i know the 10 gal is small, but all i have for tonight. tang is about 4" nose to tail. not adding the medicine to tank. after watching a few vids online, i see some try to dip on freshwater for a few seconds.

Here is some great info on ich. Unfortunately, tangs are notorious for getting ich. I would recommend quarantining all the fish in the DT and letting the DT run fallow for 6-8 weeks. This will help prevent reinfecting the fish when they are reintroduced to the tank. Good luck!!

wow, at this point is see no way i can move my fish from the DT. so im taking it the freshwater dip doesnt work?

It may work to get the ich of the fish, but it won't help the fish from getting reinfected from the ich in thank. :(

main problem is i have nowhere to put another tank, i could prob find a spot for a rubbermaid tub. i keep seeing this "transfer" method. every 2 or 3 days move the fish. thoughts on that?

thanks for all the great info on this, still unreal that im dealing with this right now. prob freshwater dip the tang tonight. put it back in the DT . call LFS and let them know what im going through. may end up returning fish to them and letting my tank sit fallow for the 6-8 weeks. ugh

just dipped the tang, some white came off but there was a lot on there. some say a few seconds for the dip, read 2 or 3 min. have no idea myself

it says that in a fish only setup ( which mine is at current time ) i can do the hyposalinity method. this may be my only hope right now if i dont want to take back all fish to LFS and see how that goes

I do not have an established QT so i have to do it in the DT ,

I cannot do the transfer method, with leaving the DT fallow for so long, that method is out the door. leaving the fish in tubs and changing water, going through so much salt and mixing every few days is not an option.

any more thoughts on this?

If your sw setup is a fish only right now, I'd hypo for sure. Been thru ich a few times (my mistakes with delicate fish) and hypo 100%. My DT (a reef) is fishless now because of a recent ich outbreak just over 6 weeks ago. The fw dips help right now but are a temporary bandage. The DT needs to either be fishless or ran in hypo (if fish only or FOWLR) state for 8-9 weeks to keep the current fish or new ones down the road from getting it. If you do choose to remove the purple, one of the Rubbermaid tubs should be fine, just get the biggest one you can (18+ gallons) and start your hypo process. GL and let us how things go.

OK so i thought i would answer this question instead of reading all these post with no answers. come on guys we a r2r here doesnt everyone know the powers of GARLIC. to answer your question and this is what i would do in my own tank. get a pill bottle crush up a clove of garlic and take some flake food and tank water add it all together and let it sit 15 min. then feed your fish the flake food. if you get a little garlic in the tank dont worry. your just using the juice of the garlic to kill the iche. but it has to be fresh garlic not already chopped up. the garlic juices chemicals are only active for about 4 hours Garlic kills ich and boosts the fish immune system problem solved. i wouldnt even worry about qt if you know its ick. its eay to take care of twice a day garlice juice from a fresh clove and soaked in flake feed all your fish. do this for 3 weeks and iche should be totally gone out of your tank. problem solved!

kinda confused on what to do. going to be hard for me to keep a rubbermaid tub for 2 months around, so will leaving him in the DT with the other fish be fine? other fish do not look like they have it yet. i assume it is ich from looking up pics online. looks like salt is sprinkled all over him. tank is FOWLR right now, well there is a small urchin in there.

the reading material givin earlier in this thread suggest garlic doesnt work, or has not been proven. ??

i would gather from here that is is now best to start dropping my tank waters salt level to 1.009 .

thought about taking tang back to pet store if it means keeping other fish safe.

how long does the hyposalintiy take to start working? i know to keep it that way for the 6-8 weeks from the reading.

Thanks again

CHECK INTO THE RUBY REEF PRODUCTS IM TREATING FOR ICH WITH KICK ICH AND THE HAVE A PRODUCT CALLED HYDROPLEX
HydroPlex
SUPPOSED TO WORK REALLY WELL

In my opinion, I would do as Saltgator suggests especially if you are FOWLR. The outbreak in the tank will continue unless you treat the source (which is now your DT as the tang introduced it there), hyposalinity is one method as is allowing the tank to go fallow for 6 -8 weeks.

I'd go hypo on the DT (remove the urchin!) and also use REEF911 suggestion of garlic in the food just to help stimulate appetite and get them eating consistently (garlic is food attractant mostly IMO). Use selcon or other vitamin soak to aid their immune systems.

Also, if you continue dipping, methylene blue is something you can add to the Freshwater to increase its efficacy. It also helps to oxygenate the water and make the water blue which may help calm the fish. For future reference this is better done before introduction to your DT when introducing new fish.

Copper is also something you can use since you run FOWLR but honestly I don't like using copper because it can certainly kill more than just parasites.

You are in for a battle but you will learn a lot...everyone has gone through this if they keep marine fish.

GL and keep this thread updated please!

very much have learned to dip first, did not know what all to add to freshwater though. i will look up the methylene blue. during the dip, i will oxygenate the water, then how long is it safe to leave the fish in there with no salt. do you leave them in the freshwater for a few seconds or more like a min or two?

also i have been alternating with my food . i have the omega one flakes, several different ones. one says "First Flakes" and then "Veggie Flakes" and then the "Marine Flakes with Garlic" .

im assuming this hyposalinity will kill my CUC , or would you try to remove them before i do this?

and yet another question.... tang is eating very well, but how quickly can he take a turn for the worse ? im just worried and dont know if i have maybe a day to begin to correct this, or im worrying too much and he will be fine for a week or two or what??
