So I found this growing, it does feel spongey. I didn't touch the spikes though lol. It's the pink thing that looks like coralline. Also got my first bristleworm sting a couple minutes ago, and for those wondering it feels like a sweat bee sting haha.

Probably a sponge. Also it looks like the rock is out of the water and a lot of sponges are intolerant to being exposed to air...

Yes I did lift it up out of the water..

If it's a sponge, it might not survive... But some do ok.

Just on that piece so far. I just set up the tank on the other side of the livingroom and found it whilst bristleworm hunting when all the rocks were taken out.
