My buddy and I were out shark fishing in the mangroves here in Southwest Florida and found these little anemones on clam shells? Can anyone ID? Would they be safe for domestication with other animals traded in aquaria? I have in blue bucket now so picture isn't great. Thanks in advance.

Thanks @Slot. New pic coming. Will let you know about keeping. They are pretty small but I have three or four of the little guys along with some snails. Let me know if you have any thoughts on adding the snails as cleanup crew as well.

Make sure you are familiar with all your local collection laws. Not knowing the law is not a legal defense.

That being said, if they are collected via fishing, and would normally be tossed and are not protected, it would be a shame not to check them out. You should contact someone at your local college or university, who could likely tell you all you need to know in a short conversation about local animals.

Yep all above board!

Oh, those are the if you find it in the ocean leave it there anemones. As a reefer and a diver, you should have more respect for ocean life. Yes we are all reefers but taking something out of the ocean especially since you don't even really know what it is, is beyond wrong, respect the hobby, respect the ocean.

I'm gonna hafta go ahead and, potentially based on the local laws that I don't know, go ahead and disagree with you there.

Would this be better?

If it is bycatch, you almost have a duty to take care of it. Not a legal responsibility, just a duty.

Ya dont know what ya dont know. Its cool.

Its coll that thing looks like a Dendro with no bone.

https://reefguide.org/keys/index19.html Should be florida natives.

OH, edit. Its hard to say what they'll do in captivity without the name and reserch. Its a 50/50. Could be fine could spread like the plague. Were I to live in florida Id have a fishing license and a fun florida tank. For indo's and known species Id have a separate Display tank.

Try feeding it something. A piece of lr and an some flow is all you need. A HOB would be perfect. but it could walk into the pump. like nems do.

Thanks for the advice. Right now I have in a small QT with a heater, an air stone, and a powerhead. I will add a piece of live rock to get filtration going. So far I have tried feeding pellets but they were too heavy and sank to bottom. Going to try some flaked food that it can hopefully snatch as it passes by in current.

That looks like a common Anemeone, usually not a home for a clownfish.
I collect lots of stuff.
As far as respecting the ocean, there's very little impact to the ocean collecting a few .
Commercial fisherman, especially netting Striped Bass off of NJ, MA, NY, and RI, have size requirements, they get paid by the pound, so here, its bigger is better. There's a term used " bycatch ", which means anything the Capt. doesn't want is bycatch. There's tons of video and pictures of their bycatch, miles of bycatch, or small Striped Bass, floating dead. It should be a crime! Totally disgusting!!!

Not going to tell you your opinion is wrong because I respect your point of view. I guess my issue with that is that collection is contemplated under the recreational license. Additionally, I have a vast respect for wildlife and the environment. These were collected personally under a valid license in the interest of curiosity and in order to identify them. I see no difference morally in these bing collected under a recreational license and a commercial license with the intention of earning a profit. In fact I see much more opportunity for abuse where there is a profit motivation. I doubt my yellow tang caught off the coast of Hawaii cares much about the license he was caught under. My point is your critique applies equally to the aquaria trade (leaving aside tank breds) and you are either ok with it or not.

Just because the adverse effect is small doesn't mean it's right, it's completely disrespectful to the ocean and horrible for the anemone. That was a dumb comment.. just saying but like with everything else in this forum, it's just one mans oponion.

What kind of snails are they? They should be good for a clean up crew

In Florida youre allowed to collect most anemones. Hes not in the wrong. Good luck with the anemone, im still trying to find out the name of them
Thanks for continuing to research. I'm still looking as well.
