Hi I'm kinda new to this site or let's say to posting here, I have always read, studied and learned from this site but never posted anything I'm not a poster or internet guy, I'm a artist and custom car builder and bike customizer so I dont have much time to post or ask things online and I'm not that good at it ither if u can tell. I have been a reefer for 5 years now and from reading all the posts of tank problems with dinos they are all about high nitrates or phosphates but I have yet to see one like the problem I'm having now,my problem is my tank was always good but I always had high phosphates but my corals always did good, one day I decided to lower my phosphates and now I have dino problems, so I just wanted to ask why no one has ever ask this and why it's always high phosphates that cause a problem when it's not always that way. And before anyone says anything about my writing I will say this, like I said I'm an artist not a writer so my bad if you dont like my grammar but if you dont then dont bother answering. I know its suck but thanks for your response. if you respond at all.

Most of the time dinos come from bottoming out phosphates or both phosphates and nitrates, thats what happened to me. Now I keep phos at .10, I hate dinos.

Edit: I got rid of them by dosing nitrates, phosphates, and an Aqua UV sterilizer

Welcome to R2R!

Welcome to R2R! Where is some art?!? You’re writing is fine and all should be welcomed here! I agree with @Hydrored on the phosphates and nitrates. What kind of tank do you have SPS, LPS, Or mixed. There are a few threads that discuss this I feel like I saw one in the past week. Let me hunt one done for ya!

I habe to reply midway through your post. Youre wrong on one point. As really no one knows for sure what causes it.. but i do know is its a growing trend thst keeping low nutrients like phosphates and nitrates.. and using gfo and stuff to remove these things has cause dino outbreaks for people.

Me personally i use tap water.. no rodi.. my nitrates are 40ppm phosphates at at least .25ppm and i have 70 corals and i dont have a dino problem. I do have some browning on the sand bed in certain spots when the lights are on for a few hours.. but these dinos havent gone beyond the sand bed.. So i just ignore it. I also have 60w of uv in my 135g

As for your grammar.. Im not a grammar freak and i hate that kinda stuff too. I tend to misspell as i type too fast.. but seperation into parragraphs makes it easier to read than a wall of words.

The brown stuff on your sand is diatoms, from the tap water. If you use RODI they should go away.

Its dinos im sure. They go away with lights off. And come back with lights on. Diatoms dont do that i thought

First, WELCOME TO R2R!

2ND-Dinos is generally from bottoming your nutrients out, but they exist in all tanks anyway. They take over when there is nothing to compete with it.

As Hemmdog said, that's diatoms not dinos. Completely different. One kills tanks, the other is slightly unsightly.

The only way to know if you have dinos for sure is through a microscope.

Yup diatoms, they come and go with your light cycle and feed off the silicates coming from your tap water.

Edit; to be clear I'm not saying change anything, heck if you're using tap and have a thriving healthy reef more power to you brother

Thanks for your response but I only use rodi and I would like to think I know my diatoms cus I had them already, or again I could say I have had them, I guess I didn't mention other then my custom car and artist stuff I'm still a low down reef nerd only cus I grew up around the ocean my entire life but now I live in a land locked state, but I'm not saying I know everything or am trying to act like some others I have seen around, i have been in this for 5 to 6 years and I'm still learning and for the once that act like they know everything they dont know anything. That's why I'm on here asking cus if I knew everything I wouldn't make my self look dumb asking,

No i didnt think you were saying to change anything. I wasnt going to anyway LOL. The brown sand in some arwas doesnt bug me. And my 70+ mixed sps lps softies zoas ect do fine on tap.. I know everyone gives me weird looks when i say tap LOL.

I couldnt do RO anyway.. my 3 lvl house i rent the basement. My tank on the 3rd lvl in my bedroom. So storing and mixing rodi in 44g trash cabs in my home isnt an option haha.

At least i know its diatoms now lol

I mean i curse like a sailor in person lol.. I also workcon cars like him.. have a classic car as well.. but i dont curse like that on forums.

Why are you calling us names when litterally no one said anything bad to you lol

It wasn't offense just in poor taste. If you came here to learn we are more than happy to have you and guide you in the right direction to the best of our knowledge. But if you are just going to come here and without provocation tell everyone off and call everyone names than please do show yourself out. Jokes are indeed funny, that was no joke. Learn where and when to talk shop and where it isn't appropriate.

Youll learn.. But yea like i said.. You and me would probly drink beer. Working on cars in the garage and curse with every other word... But on forums just dont please thats all.

I'm not offended lol.. Sarcasm is hard to convey through words on a screen. But, as mentioned above, this is a family site and I'm sure even my young kids could figure out what was being censored above.

Back to the topic at hand though, your tank.
Did you get the answer you were looking for?
You said you had high phosphates, what does your "dinos" look like? Do you have a tank pic?
