IM nuvo 10 impulse buy

do you think you could elaborate on you idea of the unly stages of a tank and its cycle i feel like no one rlly talks about it if you know any threads that are for specificly that please link me one i would greatly appreciate it.
Thank You

Alex

The ugly phase of a new tank generally refers the sudden growth of diatoms or algae as the tank matures. This is because the bare dry rock used in most set ups has nothing growing on it already. During this time while the tank is getting established, a variety of organisms will compete for space in the tank.

As the tank matures you will start to grow coraline algae which will often out compete diatoms and other algae. The uglies are compounded by the inexperience of new reefers although my new tank has them and I've been in hobby for 6 years.

This phase can start as soon as you turn your lights on and last as long as 6 months.

thank you so much

Well said reefer. The "uglies" I would say is not a scientific term. My tank is about a month old, I filled it full of coral and some fish after the cycle and all life has been very happy, but I am certainly getting some ugly going on. Started with spotty diatoms on rock and sand and now im cleaning it off the glass everyday. No green algae yet.......

When you decide to get a maxi mini watch for @AquaSD to put nems on sale or check their Ebay auctions. I have snatched up some really pretty ones for next to nothing. Here is my favorite one. I used the picture from the listing because my cell phone picture quality is very poor.

Sorry for the slow reply. I'm out of town and the motel wifi is pretty slow... oh, and I'm bust out snorkeling in the Florida Keys! But @ReeferReefer hit it just right.

Thanks for your help. Great post os info so few reefers ever talk about.

I've been scoping out some maxi minis, and did check out aqua sd while they were having that sale. that one is awesome though

The tank has been chugging along smoothly, only a couple of changes, a few more corals.
Saturday I had been noticing my snowflake clown was seeming stressed out and hiding in the corner. I knew the clown goby was rather erratic and scared the little snowflake a bit come feeding time. whether it was going on while I was away or not looking, Sunday I happened to see the goby attack the little snowflake and it would not stop, any time the clownfish swam across the cave, the goby would bolt out and attack. Needless to say, that was the gobys last day. I spent ther next 45 min patiently trying to capture it in my tiny tank with a nice cave for it to hide in while I can't get in there without major work.
Got the little ba***rd!
A lfs said they would give me some store credit for him, so off we went. While at the lfs I happened to find a nice little maxi mini anemone for a good price/ trade. So that happened, I now have an anemone that seems to be happy.
Other new additions to the tank are an orange ricordea and acan echinata.
I've also got an AI prime HD on the way that I'm super excited about
