I just put my sca-302 together last night. I haven't run it yet, but I did clean all parts and make sure the pump came apart to access the needle wheel. It did, you just have to use a little force because of the o-ring. First impression is pretty good. The packaging was very good and secure. The unit is a little flimsy feeling and the fit-and-finish is a little rough. But for the price, I can sand the few rough edges and take care not to bang it around to hard. I also noticed where the acrylic is glued together, there are small air bubbles that you don't see as much in higher end skimmers. I'll run it in a light salt solution tonight to see how it performs. I'll post some pics tonight.

I was able to find a great deal on a sca-301 for $70 shipped so I went that route.

This is my old skimmer... Freebee from reef store owner a few years ago. Don't laugh to hard.
New skimmer. Way bigger and has the new skimmer tech
Ran it to clean it last night, this weekend I will install baffles in my sump so I can break this thing in on my tank. I like it a lot so far. It is quieter than the small one with Rio 600 pump.

your first skimmer looks very similar to one of my old skimmers. I never had any problems with it but much prefer my current SKIMz skimmer. I was actually looking at a thread on RC last night with some brilliant tanks that were skimmerless. I'll stick with skimmers for the peace of mind though.

Skimmers are not rocket science. I think most all of them are way overpriced. I built my big one out of a beverage dispenser. Total cost was about $95 and $75 of that was the pumps.

Skimmers are full of science and physics though. They are getting more efficient but....... Companies are good with the smoke and mirrors.

Yep, I think you're right, looks a little too tall to go in the stand.

I want to see that thing work too Harry the next time I come see you. I know it does the job because of the way your stuff looks. My corals I got from you are growing great so that means they were healthy from the get go. Shovelrider those are good skimmers. I just had to get mine to the right depth. Once you get it dialed in youll be glad you didnt spend a million dollars on one.

So my SCA-302 is well broken-in now and exceeding my expectations! This skimmer is a beast for the price. I am glad I decided to take a chance on this thing and would recommend it to anyone with a 90g and under.
