So are imports from Malaysia not allowed?
I am just curious.

The reason I ask is because I vacation Tioman Island and the Perhentian Islands every couple of years and the corals within those areas are stunning. As a matter of fact, it is what got me into reefing nearly 20 years ago. LEDs back then were supplemental lights and insanely expensive.

It is allowed! Definitely! I know of someone who ships out these gorgeous corals around the world from Malaysia!

Does this mean, this is worth a ton of money now? I was going to actually get rid of it but guess I may hold onto it now.

Personally, I’d hold on to it because you like the coral, not because of its potential value. If you don’t want it, sell it for a reasonable price and let someone else enjoy it. Not to be brash, but thinking about how much you can get for a coral because of coral export bans is exactly what keeps me up at night wondering where this hobby will be 5 years from now...

I was actually debating getting rid of it, but if you can never get a frogspawn again than certainly I will keep it. Have actually had this peice since 2008.

From that perspective, I agree with you. I’m also sorry if what I said came off sounding harsh, I’m not trying to be a jerk. I’ve always been a big proponent of “share the love.” If all we will be left with is Aquaculture corals at the end of the day (worst case scenario), then I think it would be terrible if we let price gouging sink this hobby. I guess it remains to be seen.

There are so many rumors and hearsay floating around its hard to know what to believe. The one true fact is that Indonesia is shut down and so is Fiji. The people that do know arent speaking. We all know that our reefs arent in good shape and we might be witnessing the greatest catastrophe ever if they do in fact die. I do believe the hobby could sustain itself with what is available now. There are also universities that are studying the spawning of coral and getting to breed on demand. Neptune Systems has a great video on it. I also believe it is the duty of every shop owner to educate their customers as thoroughly as possible. I have hope that the reefs will thrive once again and this hobby will continue for many years to come. Sorry for the rant, just my 2 cents on this.

It actually took up half of a 125 gallon tank. When I moved tanks I kept 3 heads and gave the rest of it away. Couldnt get it to fit back and olace and had over a dozen rbta's that kept moving. It was pretty massive. Its also the one coral that causes me to breakout in rashes if i touch it.

Dont have to many pictures but it was all the way to the right.

Well, if you had that much of it in the past, my guess is you’ll probably have it again at some point in the future. My point remains, when that time comes, try to be generous and not think about how much it’s worth (coral bans in place or not). That’s really all I’ve been trying to say. It really set me off before when you said “Is this worth a ton of money now?” Personally, I think it was poor taste to post something like that in a discussion about coral bans and the repercussions it could have on the industry but, to each his own...

Honestly have been doing this for a long time. I personally have not bought wil coral colony in ages. Everything is aquacultured. To me a ban on fish is a bigger issue. There just seems to be a bit of inpatience with corals. Not everyone wants to buy a dozen frags and let them grow. Aquaculture is the future and honestly I dont agree with a full ban but wouldnt mind stiffer restrictions that will eventually lead to 100% aquaculture. What annoys me even more is that someone gets a shroom to bubble and calls into a bounce and then charges 6 months of cable bills for 1 shroom. Really? Someone gets a wild acro colony that colors up nicely and the gives it a super duper name and charges a fortune for 1/2 inch frag? I mean seriously? If thats the case than quite frankly I could trade off or sell my frogspawn and stock my tank with PEA aquacultured. Supply and demand.

I disagree. How do you think these aquacultured corals are being grown with new genetic strains? It is largely based off of what is provided from exports of natural farms. So to say this isn’t an issue is super naive. It absolutely matters to the industry as a whole whether you buy wholesale or not. People over charging for mushrooms are the least of our problems. It’s the mindset of “supply and demand” that’s going to spell a grim end of things, whether it’s part of economics or not. That’s the point your missing...

I guess where are you getting your aquacultured corals from? To me it makes no difference. You dont need a variety of 1,000 corals. Look at what ORA does. Got a dozen or so frags and let them grown and fill in your tanks. Soft corals like leathers, polyps, etc may be the new norm. If thats what it is then so be it. Stick a couple red and green planets and mix in a few toadstools and few clams and be done with it.

And the wholesalers should be growing out whatever they have in stock so they have a constant supply of what is currently available. I know my lfs does. Even before the ban I cant remember the last time they carried anything other than aquaculture which is all from their grow out tanks.
