I wouldn't say that I recommend sand in a sump.
I had a 4-5 inch oolite sand bed in my old tank's cryptic refugium section. It wasn't very big. I think it was a Trigger Crystal 36 sump. The goal was to have a bunch of critters in there and see how it would handle the nutrients. The thought was that I could have a deep sand bed with super fine sand and still have high flow in the display.
I can't report on the nutrient part because I was always changing stuff on that tank.
The critter part was definitely successful.

Right now I have some sand in my sump that somehow made it down there. I don't remove it because I am lazy like that, not because I think it will provide some benefit.

As long as you have sand in your display, you can call it a reef tank.

In my defense, I was switching the T5 bulbs and wanted to see what the tank would look like with a white spectrum.

The lights aren’t crooked now. Ha.

The picture was to show the sand bed. Not the dumb lights. Lol
