Instant Ocean (Bad Batch of Salt?)

Ok I was an idiot, I isolated the problem and it's NOT the salt. It's the tube I had connected to the pump. Not sure why flakes are coming off it but I don't care I tossed the tube.

I wouldnt trust using instant ocean it seemed to give my tanks all simular problems regardless of how the bag was when i bought it. I have since changed salt and use tropic marine the difference is day and night. It doesnt leave flakes or residue and everything seems to respond better to that salt than instant ocean. I think that its because it is pharmaceutical grade salt which is way finer and desolves way better
 
I believe brs did a video on which salt is the best salt mix to use

Same experience I had I quoted you in another post I switch to red sea tho no clue about tropical marine never used it so can't say a thing

I think that if you look on the back of the bags it should tell you if its pharmaceutical grade salt or not and i would use any salt that uses pharmaceutical grade salt

I did not know this now iv gotta check red sea coral pro lol

Looks like Red sea coral pro is a combo of lab grade and solar evaporated salt

They solar evaporate the red sea then add in boosters is my take

Now iv gotta check into tropical marine lol

I hear nothing but positives about it

Pls no one use reef crystal so the price stays low and I can continue to use it :)

Over last 17 yrs in the hobby, I have used tropic marine, fritz RPM, Red Sea, instant ocean reef crystal, aquaforest and esv. Fritz was an absolute no no. Esv was too much work and prone to human error.

Red Sea, tropic marine and reef crystal all have good results in the tank (reef crystal - not in the mixing bucket).
Between these three, I buy whatever is cheapest, which in last one yr has been reef crystal.

Thank you for using personal experiences not hear say as others do

I have not used tropical marine

But with io I couldn't keep a clam or some sps or a frogspawn to save my life and softys never did all that well in 10 years

With red sea I have not lost a single one due to anything other then human error in 2 years

(Lost a few sps bleached the rest a month ago heat issue)

Not sure I understand the dissolving hypothesis. You are concerned that IO gives a deficient salt mix because something important is left behind in the mixing container?

Salt studies over the years have not suggested that fresh IO is deficient in anything.

Hmmmmmm seems at some point most do have a problem and those that switch see immediate results for the positive soon after

So I guess 1000s of people are all wrong and you are right wow what a big head you have

I could keep going on and on and on but why bother

The last post I linked is the most troubling showing toxic levels of freshly mixed salt guess what io not to good
 
And yet is the most widely used, and oldest salt on the market.

I can dig up those same posts about RC, TM, RS, and just about any other salt on the market. Do not blame a salt on the poor husbandry practices, or lack of knowledge of hobbyist.

If you actually read any of those threads, it was mostly some other issue, that the OP thought was the salt, but later on in the thread it was debunked.

Again, if IO is such crap as you have said, explain to me why nearly every public aquarium(who cares about the life of their livestock more so then a hobbyist), and research facility uses it?

OOh wait, you can't. You'll just post more google hits about IO being crap without actually reading the thread.

And still waiting on the evidence you said you have(your words exactly "I have sent it out to a lab") on the brown crud being clay.

Yet your previous posts in other threads state you had a frogspawn for 8 years.

Previous post also says you have never had a clam in your 12 years of reefing but feel confident enough to try now.

Must have been the first 2 years of his tanks life, which goes through all kinds of ups and downs. But lets just blame it on the salt. Seen the same threads hundreds of times, and every time it's not the salt.

I've used IO on and off for the better part of 20 years(between switching to try out the "new reef salt of the month", never noticed any difference between it, and any other salt I tried out. At the end of the day, my wallet decided what salt to use.

FWIW, a $27 sediment filter in a $20 housing, mitigates any brown crud in the water. And I still save money over buying $100 pail of salt.
