I overdosed interceptor... threw a ***** phat dose in... all my crabs were statues... awesome.

Coco worm survived.. SPS is looking kill so far.. about to follow up in a few days with another mega dose...

55g is on the comeee baaccckkkkk...

I have yet to find anything, except maybe some bristle worms, that cares about even uber strong Interceptor doses.

It's funny.. all the crabs I payed money for kicked the bucket like a clumsy reefer... but all the nasty black hitch crabs in my rocks are still peeking out like "mahhhhh!"

IMO, if you have a crab or shrimp survive, then who's to say you didn't have a red bug survive. It's all or nothin' in my book!

Very true.. I should have just tossed a grenade in the reef. :p

But why OD the tank when the one large breed pill per 400 net gallons works fine, kills all the redbugs in one sitting, and leaves larger crustaceans like shrimp and crabs unharmed?

Seem like a lot of unnecessary killing of crustaceans to OD the tank when it is not needed. Waste of money as well.

Word up! Crabs steal my corals target fed food and the emeralds I occasionally use turn to mush with interceptor. I like Astrea snails, although they are so dumb they can't right themselves when they fall over, lol.

I use 3x dosage of interceptor and I have been using the chewy tabs with prazi. How much did you dose Kraylen?

What is "one large breed pill"??

Interesting. Do we know this to be true?

I know from personal experience treating my own tanks. That dosing level came from Dustin at ORA. He originated the use of Interceptor for Redbug treatment in reef tanks.

Interceptor is sold in pill sizes according to the weight range of the dog it is intended for. The large breed interceptor pill (white package) is .96 grams in weight and is what most folks buy to use when they treat their tanks. Each large breed pill (for dogs 51-100 lbs) has 23 mg. of Interceptor (milbemycin oxime). For reefers, the large breed pill is the most medicine for the money, so that is probably why it is the most popular.

See, basically we are saying that a certain dose is enough to kill a certain size arthropod. That dose is target organism size dependent? This is a huge assumption. This is also assuming no other factors, most importantly toxicity to various arthropods regardless of size, and homogeneity of the chemical in the water.

So back to your original point. At $20 per pill, I'd rather just overdose, and lose a few shrimp/crabs, than depend on, quite honestly, not quite laboratory determined guidelines.

JMO.

It really is not a huge assumption, Peter. Most medication dosage for humans and animals are based on x amount of medicine per x amount of body weight, which is basically concentration in a person or animal's circulatory system. What we are talking about here specific to reef tanks is what is the interceptor concentration per gallon of water needed to kill the redbugs? Larger crustaceans have hundreds of times more body mass than redbugs, so a much higher concentration of interceptor is needed to kill them. A concentration that would kill Redbugs would only irritate larger shrimp or crabs that would otherwise survive and live. Overdose the tank with more Interceptor than you need, and you needlessly kill larger crustaceans when you could use the lower dosage that does the same job on the redbugs, but doesn't harm the larger crabs and shrimps.

It just struck me as cruel and wasteful to kill beneficial stuff with an unneccessarily high dose of the medication. I feel a responsibility to take care of what I place in my tank, whether it be a coral, fish crab or shrimp. Discounting the life of an animal I purchased and placed in my reef, specifically crabs or shrimps, just doesn't seem right. They all have life.

A regular dose is enough to kill red bugs. But we do 2-3 treatments over the course of one month, that way you are sure to get everything. Acro crabs (except the furry ones) are beneficial to the corals. Kinda weird that you guys are so anti-crustacean. Must be a guy thing.

We've found out the hard way that nuking a tank to kill a pest can cause very big problems for corals, not just critters. We dosed Furan 2 for zoo pox hard for 3 days and even did water changes. Well, nearly all of my really nice high end zoo collection bleached and several have died.

Treating corals in moderation is better even if you have to do it more times.
