Anyone having problems finding interceptor?

I was looking into it online after hearing a few people mention they can't find it. So I went to 1-800-PetMeds and found this: "Manufacturer Update: Interceptor will not be available for approx. 3-4 months nationwide."

I thought that was odd so I google searched for Milbemycin Oxime (The active ingredient in interceptor). I found this tragic little tidbit on Wikipedia:

Wikipedia; said:
Currently, Novartis has halted production of this product and it is unavailable. There is no indication of when production may resume
(Milbemycin oxime - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

This is not good! Novartis was the only place that made milbemycin oxime and they stopped production!

I did a little more digging. Novartis still has Interceptor on their website (That does not mean much though). They have several other dog meds with Milbemycin Oxime in them, but these meds also have other active drugs in them.

Does anything else kill Little Red Bugs? (It dip/bath form) This does not look good for people who need to treat their whole systems.

If anyone has any info regarding this, please post!

I have used coral rx with success. I dipped all Sps together for a week straight.

Do a search for Bayer Complete Insecticide dip. There are a few threads describing use of it. I've used it on incoming sps several times with great success

Thanks for the tip. How do smooth skinned acros do with it?

My vet had told me awhile back that the manufacturing plant that produced Interceptor had ran into all kinds of regulation compliance problems and was shut down - he didn't sound too confident that the product was coming back.

Vet told me that the maker has problem with the last batch and it has not been available for almost 10 months now.He sais he don't see it coming back into the market anytime soon.

I agree with joe, but only as a dip. Works really well. I dipped my red dragon in it when I got it, didn't bother it at all!

Deleted...I'm a moron.

Found this quote.

One thing to note it's that Interceptor is becoming increasingly difficult to acquire. The factory has halted production and I've heard no definitive reason why. I've heard anything from patent law infringement to switching production to a higher priority drug to bankruptcy....

At any rate, it may take a bit of searching to find a vet with Interceptor on hand that is wiling to give you a script for your tank (some vets won't do it, regardless of how much documentation you provide because it's an off label use). I haven't read about any testing being done as of yet with the substitutes that are easily available, but I know of a few in the works.

Also have a thread going on the local forum. Interceptor/LRB "Info Hash" - TCMAS

I also used rx coral dip on infected pieces, they target smooth skin acros so they are the ones i would keep an eye on and dip a couple of times and shake the pieces off in the dip to dislodge the bugs best as possable. It seemed to work for me but my infestation was'nt that bad, and havent seen anything since.

Good luck

It has been a long while since it was available. Our vet still do not know if or when they will have more instock.

It works just fine. I've used it. I got it from a Canadian pharmacy and they did call my vet for a prescription.

The spectrum is milbemycin oxime with praziquantel but the prazi is a pretty low dosage and I had no negative effects from using it whatsoever. If you search around the Internet you will learn that alot of reefers have been getting the interceptor spectrum internationally with great success.

Coral rx does not kill red bugs. They say it on their site.

I'm trying the bayer product tonight

I just bought some last week here in Canada, the Vet told me not many places have it during the winter, as the worm for dogs typically comes in spring. Maybe this could be a reason why its hard to find right now?

Can you give some more info. How do you get it to dissolve?

I never noticed this. Thanks for the tip. Any info on other dip brands?

It has not been available for quite some time in the US. I searched the web and all I could find was the Interceptor Spectrum stuff which is a little different.

Something else to note is that some people have had trouble killing LRB with interceptor. They may have a resistance developing, not sure.

The only info I have right now that can kill LRB in your display is reports of LRB dying when temps are dropped to 65 or below. This is a bad idea to do with corals in your tank though and is not proven.
