The water trickling into my overflow is tranquil. The return pump whispers. The wavemakers are virtually silent. But the water flowing from the overflow down into the sump sounds like a waterfall. I can hear it clear across the house. Is this normal?

I added a piece of hose ,so that the overflow drain is underwater very quiet [emoji42][emoji42][emoji42][emoji42]

If your overflow hose has a loop in it it will make a lot of noise

I just did that. It helped some. Now instead of sounding like a roaring waterfall it sounds like a giant bubbling cauldron. :) I'm thinking maybe I have too much flow. From what I've been reading my return pump is really for a larger tank. It's a mag 9 and my tank is 60g.

On your overflow return the one in the over flow do you have a 90 elbow into the water or just the top of a pipe if you have just the pipe open on top the air getting sucked in will break up the water flow and you get your waterfall noise

It has the elbow and an air hole in too. I had to make the air hole a bit bigger earlier because it was creating a siphon.

The drain is on the left

I had the same problem and got a square piece of bubble trap foam to fit in my filter sock. Cut a home half way through the foam and slid it over the end on my drain pipe inside my filter sock. Quite as can be now!!

Is that something you can get at pretty much any hardware store?

I cut my return and made a herbie. Rerouted the return over the tank. Quiet as can be. Now if I just had a quiet return pump.

I'd advise putting an air valve on the air intake so you can tune it. Durso overflows need to be tuned to the flow.

Or go for a herbie. That's what I use.

Another thing you might try if practicable, is to move your overflow plumbing so that it's on more of an angle. Right now the water is falling almost straight down to the sump, if you angle it more it will run more down the side of the plumbing. Also is the durso adjustable(up/down), if so try moving it up /down to see if it helps.

not an expert here but if the vertical drain is a large diameter it will have air, and a high flow rate creating some water rushing type noise.

I think one way to correct that is to create an intentional blockage to basically slow the water speed down. Which obviously can be dangerous as you still want it to fully drain.

to test try putting something, even just your hand over the outlet at the refugium/sump to slow the water down and see if it also runs quieter. If so then try different pipe sized, adapters, or whatever for a more permanent solution.

If it is rubber hose get a longer hose for the drain and add a loop to slow down the water draining so fast .thats what I did on my tank it is very quiet

Is it pvc all the way to the sump or rubber hose?

It looks like pvc but it's not as hard as pvc. Sorry, plumbing isn't really my forte so I'm not sure what it's called. I added an extender thing on the end so now the water comes out below the water line. That helped a good bit. Now instead of sounding like a rushing waterfall it sounds like a bubbling Jacuzzi. :)
