Is dosing even necessary in a reef?

Do any of you use crushed coral to help with ph? I have wrasse and didn't want to add it to substrate
 
I religiously do weekly water changes. I also test my alk daily and manually dose appropriately. My previous tank, a 75 gallon, consumed 70 ml each of calcium and alk daily on top of the weekly water changes due to the amount of sps I had in that tank.
If you want to have stability in your tank you will probably have to dose to replenish the elements your corals are consuming or your tank will have swings making it unstable and you won't be able to keep those pretty corals we all want...;)

All live rock and live sand are the same thing as crushed coral and buffer the water. It's slowly stops the buffering action as it's coated with bacteria.

High alk is just more availability to the coral. with low flow its kinda meaningless as its doesnt absorb without proper flow,esp if you may not know what any of this means. a lot of folks dont.
Red Sea coral PRO just sounds good!

I think you are misunderstanding. You don't dose for "High Alkalinity", you dose for consistent Alkalinity. You target an Alk level, and you try to keep it consistent. Water changes can not keep the Alk as consistent as a dosing setup if you keep hard corals. And the concern about mechanical things breaking might be a little over the top. Probability says you will screw up dosing manually much more often then your dosing system will break. And if it breaks, the likelyhood of it breaking in the "On" position would seem almost impossible.

Do lps like a consistent high alkalinity like sps is what I'm asking then? , I've herd plenty of horror stories about equipment failure ,nothings perfect though , I enjoy manually dosing it gives me time to notice any problems that might be there

hard to say. and no he is a chemist. its probably fine. low cal will make a coral brittle.

I've seen some sps colonies that are huge but look really skinny and I've seen some that are stubby and thick branched
 
The notion that these "chemicals" are somehow inherently bad because they are man-made is unfounded. Natural salt can be extremely unpure and a large portion of good salts have elevated levels of Magnesium, Calcium, or Alkalinity added as well. Only 'dosing' salt per-say, has the same negative consequences as dosing the chemicals separately.
