Is it time for the hobby to pick up again?

Here in Farego there are new tanks starting up all the time. The hobby is growing for sure and I will have less to do outside in the winter so more time to devote to the tank. Not too many breaking down systems around here.

I never took a break from my tank either and I don't plan to unless something bad happens.

I think us die hard guys/gals will continue as always. I fell the slowness in the hobby is that its always had a really high turnover. A huge number of people get in and find out its not for them after a while. Lately the crop of newbys isnt like normal to fill in the gap. Its a big investment/money pit in this economy. Im sure many of us lifers have though about getting out at one point or another too.

this hobby always has had a bit of a cycle to it with the winter months tending to more indoor time due to the sun cycle and more hours of darkness = more hours indoors = more tank time
i actually try to take advantage of this and bought a couple frag packs at summer pricing

the economy will play a part though and many don't have expendable money this year

another factor is there doesn't seem to be any really hot items this year. everything has kinda cooled off and the get rich quick fraggers don't have a get rich quick coral to capitalize on. many of the long timers don't tend to buy into these hype corals like newer reefers do and there seems like there are less newer reefers these days. so i think there will be less hyped up over priced corals hitting the market

so the winter will always see a slightly higher involvement but over all a little less this year then some winters have seen

I thought the hobby was slowing down until I attended a local frag swap that was wall to wall with new hobbyists. I also wonder how much of an influence this new tv show will have. Sure the hobby is expensive, but it's become much more accessible and less intimidating for newcomers compared to only a few years ago.
