Hey guys! Ive been inactive for about 16 months or so, but now I am so excited that I am back. Thats right I will have a tank set up in my house very soon.....my soul has been aching.

Anyway Ive seen that a ton has changed and or improved in the hobby and I was looking to get everyones opinion and .02 cents on the Vortch mp20 pump with battery back up? Is it really worth the cheese? Ive heard very few complaints, but I still want to hear from Reef2Reef community. I probably don't need to tell anyone this because you already know but people on R2R are the best!!

Thanks a ton, please don't hold back, share your experiances and tips with use, setup, and where to purchase.........good or bad!

I have heard so many bad things about vortexs. In my opinion NO! Save money and add some tunzes or Korialas or even the mj mods, better bang for the buck. I have just been hearing so many bad things about the wet side failing and it cost 75 to replace and now there is a thread on here today about the wet side NOT sticking to the glass!

IMO you are better off with some thing else!

IMO pass on the MP20. For not much more you can get the MP40. It is the exact same FP and pushes more water. If you don't need that much flow you have the option to turn it down. You also have wireless communication if you have multiple MP40 as the Mp20 doesn't. I love these pumps I now have 3 in my 270g.

Keep an eye out for GB of this product sometimes you can get the MP40 for $360 shipped.

what size tank are you going to use it for?

congrats and welcome back... :)

Have you actually had personal experience with it?
I love my mp40, I would def choose it over a mp20, anything that can go wrong should be covered under warranty and they are VERY good about handling things. We are a dealer for ecotech and although we have had a few vortechs come through that are quirky they have ALWAYS replaced them, usually I don't even have to RMA they just send me the new wetside or whatever in 2 days.
Battery backup is a must, im going to try and get one before winter comes.

Nope, i have heard way to many bad things about them. It seems most people who i have talked to have had issues with them! Just wanted him to know to do your research before you buy a 400 dollar power head :)

cant beat the vortech. Looks so sleak and its not a big powerhead all the way in your tank blocking veiwing space. You can put on reef currents or waves. Nothing an mj or koralia can do

I spent less than $100 on two Koralia 3s, and they work great. As a minimalist (but successful) reefer, the thought of spending $800 for two powerheads makes me a bit queezy haha.

the koralias, tunzes and mjs with the sure flow mod are all awsome powerheads for the money. ive used all three! i currently have two tunzes 6025 which i modded(very simple you can find it on line) and they now produce about 1300ghp! sick for a 60 dollar power head!

I have 2 x MP40w on my 120 and a MP20 on my CADlights pro 39. I absolutely love the MP20. I just got the MP40's used from a local reefer. He told me ahead of time that one of them had issues and didn't spin. I contacted EcoTech customer service about it and it is still under warranty. Stephen has worked EXTREMELY patiently with me to figure out what my problem was and how to fix it. My replacement parts are due here today. I can say that I love the product and have now found out that their customer service is TOP-NOTCH! It really doesn't get any better.

FWIW, Tunze's are always a good option. If you want to talk about issues, though, Koralia's have been fraught with them. I have several and never had problems but many people have had them leaking stray current into the tank and causing severe damage to livestock.

I say that if you have the coin to drop, go ahead. Worst case scenario, if you hate them, just sell them used and take a small loss.

I can only speak from my experience..I had 2 mp40's ... wet side kept falling off,,, nothing but problems, But when thye did work they had excellent flow.

I've been running 2 mp40's for six months now and haven't had a bit of problems with them. I highly recommend them.

Even with the issues I have had, I would still buy another one.
Especially since it was something that was out of their control and they are taking care of - the driveshaft issue.

Steve in their service department has been nothing but professional and accomodating when I have had issues. It seems all the issues I have had, all stem from the same problem and I/they just found out the problem and solution.

I actually like my little MP10 . If I were buying the 20 I would get the the 40 for several reasons .
1. wireless sync function
2. If ur out that far out on funds might as well get the top dog .
I had an issue with my MP10 going into disconnect mode but no issues on the wet side dropping in the tank .
I called for support and Steve helped resolve the issue in no time .

Hey thanks Marvin, I m really excited to get this baby running.

Its going to be a 60 gallon cube I ordered last week from Great Lakes. I like the idea of this pump for its size and ability for my tanks size. The Tunze are too big and Ive been down the Seio/Rio route before.
I think that a few more major selling features for me are the ability to adjust the flow. Nothing is more annoying to me than an ugly pump that is either too strong or not strong enough for what I had pictured it to do for me. Another advantage is the battery back up feature as well as possible wireless hookup. These are features Im willing to splurge on.

However on the other had it is very expensive, actually more than I had ever imagined spending on a pump. I actually remember looking into it a while back and as soon as seeing the pricing page I imediatly said........and changed the page. And if I am going to need to get another pump of some type to keep me going during down time, this is a major deciding factor.

Is there anyone who has had this this pump on a cube that can share there experiances?

have you seen the tunze nanostreams? they are actually quite small
the only problem with the nanostreams are they arent controllable, except the 6055 which is quite expensive
i had the mp20 and i thought it was awesome
never had a problem

i've been running my mp40 for 7 mths now with no issues whatsoever. i love the thing. now that i've said that i'll probably go home tonight to find that the wet side failed. lol!
