Depending on the goby size, I have had one jump and get out even with a tight fitting lid, I would look around very carefully for him. Check the overflow/sump if you have one.
Finally, I have had fish disappear for a few days then magically re-appear. Just this week my goby (who is pretty large now) hid in his cave for 2 days. The current record holder in my tank is a shrimp that disappeared for 6 weeks, I thought there was no way he was alive... then one day he was out taking a walk haha.
If you are worried about him dying, check ammonia for a spike, might have gone down already if he died a few days ago.
