If that is the one you want to use, then it should work just fine. I use a simple light refractometer, that costs $20, for the last 5 years with no issues as well. I have thought about buying the one you are asking about, but it seems more of a luxury, than a necessity. All of them are hobby grade testers, and not 100% accurate.

I like mine it’s consistent easy to use and tested against my LFS and read the same as their water. Just make sure to bring it up to tempature first. The one thing I don’t like is the S.G. Range is only two decimal places should be three

What do you mean by this?

Mine shows my 1.026 - 3 decimal places when viewing in SG format.

If yours is only showing 1.02 - Then thats of no use at all

You'll need to get several and check them against each other periodically for a reference.

I have the tropic marin hydrometer and the Milwaukee digital. It's easier to use the Milwaukee so most of my readings is on that. Every now and than I check it with the TM hydrometer

The MA887 is a great refractometer; I use mine all the time. Calibrate with a reference solution every so often and you will be set for a long time to come. Welcome to the hobby!

I also use a MA887 and it is pretty accurate, but I still double check against a cheap refractometer every once in a while.

I’ve had an MA887 for years. They work very well and are easy to calibrate and extremely reliable in my experience. like @Tuan’s Reef said - I check mine against my Tropic Marin Hydrometer every month or so. I don’t every really need to check salinity unless adding new fish because I mix my salt and water at the same amounts each time.

LiamPM my mistake yes three decimals . My point is 1.026 could range from 1.0255 to 1.0264

The large glass TM hydrometer is what I found to be the most accurate, but most difficult to use. I use one to standardize my other devices.

I ditched my Milwaukee for the Hanna Marine Salinity Tester - it's portable, accurate, easy to calibrate and $50 less than cost of the Milwaukee - which i found to be very sensitive to water temp

I bought two of the Hanna probes early on - they both read consistently low, and needed a correction factor. I hope they've updated the firmware, they are really handy and much less prone to corrosion than the Milwaukee unit.

Why difficult to use? Dont use just put it in water?

I have a cheap optical refractometer, the Hanna salinity tester, and the Milwaukee digital refractometer and if I go to check my salinity the only one I ever use is the Milwaukee.

It’s the Milwaukee MA887 that I have and is commonly used in the hobby. I don’t believe any of their other models are suitable for aquarium use.
The one I have is the older one with the green case but from what I understand the color change was the only difference.

Also if you do decide to get it saltwateraquarium has it on sale for a good price.
