Is this 2 ppm or 5 ppm?

And the digital tests can be quiet expensive. (I know... Everything in this hobby is expensive)
That is true, and the api is fine for watching a cycle as long as you’re aware of the ammonia showing some present when there likely isn’t.

After the cycle you’ll likely never use ammonia, or nitrite (if you even use it for a cycle) ever again. Eventually getting a better nitrate test is a good plan IMO. I love my Hanna HR nitrate checker but the salifert is pretty good too.

I highly recommend a Red Sea marine care test kit as an upgrade from api. That’s the route I went anyway. I found them much easier to read the colors and much more exact. Eventually I moved up to the Hannah for phosphates, nitrate and alk.
I will try them out because these colors are driving me insane hahah

I’ve never used the Red Sea test but on the salifert nitrate test you will still have to match the color to a chart. I just find it more accurate because there are two ways to read the value. You can look down through the vial and match to the chart, or look sideways through the vial and divide the matching color by 10 to get your reading.

Well, it has two ways to read it so it is more "precise" since you can double check the result.

I will give them a try. I keep reading good things about them.

Dilute test with fresh SW and tank water 1:1 then 1 or 2.5 is easier to distinguish.

Can you please all send me your API test kits instead of throwing them away, like freebies
