Yesterday I tested amonia, trites and trates and all were 0. Test kits were brand new. The white stuff seems less, not so much in the water, but floating on top. I think I will give my tank a good cleaning tomorrow.

It's been so long since I have quarantined a fish, is it a month? I have a 10$ coupon to my LFS that expires Dec 31. Was going to get a frog spawn and cleaner shrimp. Should I hold off on all critters for the 6 weeks?

No, it is fine to add corals/inverts. Actually probably the best time. If they are carrying tomonts, the fallow period means there will be no fish for the free swimmers to latch onto.

Sweet, thanks. I love cleaner shrimp, they are fun and playful. Will make my tank seem better with Skippy gone.

Thank you everyone for all the help.

He was fine yesterday, ate good swimming great. I noticed it first thing this morning.

I can see in the photos that we was swimming abnormally, and he also seems to be fairly skinny. From your description it seems odd. I'm wondering if the white stuff in the water is a bacteria bloom. That wouldn't necessarily affect Skippy unless the bacteria consumed all the oxygen and left him with little. He obviously had an infection, but I don't think it was Brook or Ich - I'm leaning towards Marine Velvet, but I'm thinking there was something going on in the tank to stress him out and make him susceptible.

So I was doing my daily routine in my tank this morning and I think I know what happened. I use this product call nano A&B. When I first started my tank 10 yrs ago I used this stuff faithfully every day and loved it. Over the past few yrs I haven't used it so I'm kinda gettin back in the swing of using it again. You add part A at 8 drops per 4 gal, wait 5 min then add part B at 8 drops per 4 gal. I add the drops to a little dish so if I squeeze much I can start over. I usually rinse this dish out before adding part B, but I didn't this morning and when I added part B to my tank white stuff was EVERY WHERE.

I'm wondering if this maybe killed Skippy. :( If this white stuff stuck all over him, caused him to breath heavy and with his age...?

Myka mentioned him being a bit skinny and he probably was. I didn't realize his food had been expired for about a year. I purchased the same brand of food (New Life Spectrum), but he didn't want to eat it. It took him a couple weeks for him to take it, but I'm also thinking the expired food might have not given him the full nutrition.

Does any of this make sense?

So, I looked this stuff up and below was taken from Kent Marine's website:
KENT Marine Nano Reef Part A contains calcium, magnesium, strontium, iron, and many other important elements necessary to maintain proper water parameters in nano-reefs and other small reef systems.

KENT Marine Nano Reef Part B is an ionically-balanced buffer to Part A that increases alkalinity and maintains a stable pH.

If you overdosed the Part B, it would probably cause the alkalinity and maybe also the pH to shoot up unexpectedly. That happening could cause damage to your fish, especially if the pH shot way up. But your corals should also be greatly affected.

No, corals are doing better then ever and I didn't overdose. I think a little bit of Part A was left in the dish because I forgot to rinse, then when I added Part B, they coagulated, not knowing, I added it to my tank. I bought a droper today so this won't happen again. Not sure if it's what killed my fish or not, nothing else inmy tank was bothered, but either way it wasn't good for my tank.

I guess there is no way of knowing either way. I will leave the tank fishless for 6 weeks. I don't have a QT tank. I use to have a 6 gal nano I used for that, but I broke it down when we moved 3 yrs ago. I recently gave it to a friend.

I asked my LFS if they could quaritine, but they don't do that. You said it didn't have to be fancy, but what about size? Could I get like one of those little fish kits that have the LED lighting and under gravel filter? I have an extra heater I could put in it.

You just have a 12 gal nano, right? So nothing but small fish will go in this tank?

Why not get you a couple of 5 gallon buckets and do TTM on all future fish purchases: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/tank-transfer-method.192655/

Yes, just a 12 gal. The only future fish would be 1 ocellaris clown (which I hope to keep for another 6 yrs). I read the TTM article. Could I set up a 5 gal bucket with heater and air tube as a QT? The article mentioned switching the fish every couple days to the other bucket, but I wouldn't have to do that, right? Because I'm not treating for ick or anything. It also talked about steralizing my DT tank, but I wouldn't have to do that as long as my DT has been fish free for the 6 weeks to prevent another velvet outbreak?

Did I understand that corectly?

Well, it doesn't matter what you do to the DT if you dont treat your new fish. That fish will just bring whatever diseases it's carrying into the tank with it. I mean, you can do what your saying, but if you are only going to have one fish, then why not just make sure that one fish is as healthy as you can make him before going into the tank? Just my opinion :)

I think he's wanting to just use the 5 gal bucket to passively observe. Not prophylactically treat with any medications. Is that right?

Oh gotcha. So as long as that fish doesn't develop any symptoms of anything that needs treating, then I would say so. Gotta keep up with those water changes if your not using a filter of any kind... like daily. And make sure you are topping off the evaporated fresh water as well.

Hmmmmm I just found a 5 gal fish tank with a hood and light for 35.00. I can get a hang on the back hobb filter that treats a 10 gal tank for 8.00. And I have a heater. I might just do that. Not sure I want an open 5 gal bucket in the house for a month (2 shepards, a cat etc) not to mention my husband and I have 3 special needs adults that live with us.

And correct on the just watching the fish, not treating with any medication (unless he does get something while in the QT tank). I think it will also be easier to watch him in a glass tank then a 5 gal bucket.

sounds like a plan. My LFS is having a sale on clowns this month. Instead of 15.00 they are 10.00.

I will make sure the end of his 4 week quarantine is the end of my 6 week cycle of being fishless. Maybe I will play it safe and go 7 weeks.

thanks for all the help.

Just watch closely for any key behavioral symptoms of disease in QT. Two diseases - ich & flukes - can harbor inside a fish's gills out of sight. But you should still notice twitching or shaking of the head, rubbing or scratching against something, or darting quickly through the water in an attempt to "dislodge" whatever is bothering the gills. You need to pay close attention to detail, and sit in front of the QT for at least 15 mins every single day in order to see a pattern develop and that something is off with your fish.

Some people just choose to prophylactically treat because they don't have time for that due to today's hectic schedules.

Okay, I think I'll go take a look at the article on medicines to have on hand too.

Thanks

In thinking all this through, I just realized I can't use any of my tank water to use in QT tank because of the velvet. So when I fill the tank, it will have to be fresh made water, is there any problem with that?

Using fresh saltwater is fine and recommended for this reason.

+1 Just make sure the salt is completely dissolved before putting fish in it. I personally like to wait 12-24 hrs, but you can use freshly mixed SW in 3-4 hrs in a pinch.

I'm getting the fish and the tank the same day. I wish the LFS was closer (it's an hour away) So I kinda have to make it worth my while. The LFS is having a special in Dec on their Marina tanks (25$off) so their 5 gal kit is 34.00 instead of 59.00.

But I will make sure all salt is dissolved. I agitate the water for a while with air, usually helps.

Maybe I will get a 5 gal bucket and make the water the day before.
