As someone with multiple businesses tied to shipping, I can almost guarantee it is not greed. The economics of the supply chain are getting crushed right now. Let’s not always assume the worst in people

Do the math, Marine Depot is a huge distributor on both coasts. They supply hobby shops all over the USA. They buy 2-4 thousand buckets of salt at a time. But we can give them the benefit of the doubt. Lets only say they bought 1000 buckets. The rise in cost is $15,000 to the consumer.
Using what your saying is that it’s shipping costs. At a time when fuel prices have tanked. No, I’m not buying it.

Thanks to a video or two from BRS the salt has become very popular. So supply and demand means they can try to charge more.

A $15 per bucket price increase is without a doubt greed related. Somewhere in the chain someone is trying to make allot more money off the popularity and rarity of this salt.

I bought mine from MD a month ago for 99 shipped. I had IORC but had the issues as mentioned above, plus the only place I could find it locally was petco and they had it marked at 95 dollars, so I made the switch

So this will be fun. We know MD is offering TMPro for $115 while BRS is out. Wonder what their price will be when BRS has it In stock again. Of course if BRS goes to $115 then ....

That’s nothing. I picked up a bucket of NeoMarine from Amazon a few weeks ago at $65. It then went up to almost $200 from price gouging third parties. Thankfully, it came down again, but that was insane.

Yea, I got that Email too, that’s a crazy price increase. Pure greed when times are tough. Since I couldn’t get any, I’ve started the switch to RS.

How can you say that without knowing import and shipping costs?

I just checked at BRS and it is back in stock at $99. I will order from them. I have never ordered from BRS before. I purchase everything from MD. I hope this is just a supply and demand issue on their side.

I have several buckets of TM (much to my wife's dislike). When I started out I wanted to use TM Pro from the getgo.

Unfortunately, with running multiple QT tanks for fish and coral, plus the DT, using TMP became cost-prohibitive very quickly. So I switched to IO for the whole operation.

What I noticed, everything grows OK (all LPS/softies/hammers) but man... Mixes all over the place. Dkh is fairly stable, but Ca and Mg is a crap-shoot....380-500 and 1400-1580 respectively. Plus, looks like hotdog water (I usually strain through a sock when adding to DT).

Once everything settles and I'm not running multiple tanks with constant WCs, I'll be switching back to TMP.

I use TM and love it. But I also have 7 qt tanks, a 135 fish only , 25 lagoon softies, 90 gal frag tank and my 245 SPS dominate DT . I only use TM on my coral tanks. The rest get IO mixed in a brute the day before. IO doesn’t see my water change system. Since switching from Live aquaria salt to Tropic Marine my SPS have taken off.

That’s really interesting. I’m the opposite. My first choice is BRS then MD. I’ve found MDs ability to confirm my order and ship seems slower than BRS. Total guess but I think MD is more of an online storefront and that inventory, order fulfillment, and shipping is handled by a third party.

Actually it could be in the shipping. Under normal circumstances this product would be shipped to the US on a ship with many other containers and would take around 30 days port to port. When we have shortages and shipping disruptions the product must now be shipped by plane which cost much more.

I just switched from IORC to TMPR 2 months ago. I picked up a 200 gallon bucket for $99. I am almost out so I decided to pick up another a week ago. Everywhere was sold out. So I set up an auto email when it was back in stock. I just received the email it was. I went to place the order and it is now $114.99.

I did end up buying it but is this just because of the current economy of shipping shutdowns + supply and demand or is this going to be the new price?

If so, I might just have to make a switch to something else. That is going to eat a hole in my wallet real quick.

I wrote MD and they responded that they do not price match salt.....

I remember watching a BRS video saying they make nothing on salt. In fact, Randy said they lose money. Being a large distributor, they make it available because reefers need it and we will probably buy more product from them. Kinda of a loss leader, like cheap turkey is at thanksgiving.

Not sure other distributors can do that as easily.
