I want to get a RTA for my pair of clownfish but I already have a lot of corals in the tank. If I put the RTA on it's own island with sand around it, can it still roam over the sand to another spot? I'm afraid of it roaming around killing the other corals.

Hi There,

So with anemone's there is always a chance of them moving around as they have a "foot" if they don't like the spot they will go to where they do in fact like the conditions.

Usually for me what I do is tell people when starting a tank to add the anemone first and let it settle, But even with that analogy there is always a chance they can move.

Just keep a close eye on it and go from there.

Keep me posted.

I’m personally done with anemones for that very reason. They did very well in my mixed reef but then started roaming around the tank. Arrrg! If you’re going to have one, keep on top of it! Good luck.

I wish they don’t move. I don’t want it to roam around. Was hoping the island with sand will force it to stay. I know they like to move around until they like the light and flow of a spot. Maybe I’ll get lucky that spot in my tank I’m eyeing is good for it.

The Nems like to find a light, flow AND good rock with ability to securely "J-Hook" on ... the larger the Nem, the more stable and bigger J-Hook they want to make to feel securely planted ...

The more your clowns love them, the more they split.

You can't stop them from roaming. Just make sure they don't walk into your wave maker, or you will get a full tank of anemone broth, which is way more than just killing corals.

I always think if someone is wanting something to keep an anemone in place they should not get one. They move when they need to or want to and should be allowed to do that in my opinion :)

Definitely. I have found that if you give them rocks with through holes and gaps and ledges they can 'j' into and through they love that. Kinda like a loose stack with gaps. Makes them feel protected and gives them a place to retract to out of the light/flow should they want to(these ones are out all the time except after lights out they shrink a bit). At one time i had a powerhead blowing pretty hard right next to them, i think they actually liked it, made them huge and stringy though. These ones split, yet again. I will have to snag that lower one before it gets to the lobo.
If you plan it out and find what they like, it IS possible to get them to stay put.

I plumbed a ten gallon cube into my display tank’s sump. It sits right next to my display and gets enough flow from the return pump that I don’t need power heads. I have flower anemones in the rubble and a RBTA that roams around and splits at will. I’m up to four RBTAs in about a year. The whole thing has worked out great. I get all the anemone enjoyment literally side by side with my display, perfect water quality, and no powerhead or coral warfare concerns.

Thanks for the replies, I decided not to get one. Just not worth the hassle if things goes south.

I started with one. Now have 14 splits/clones. They have crossed sand, found new islands and found homes on the glass. The original has stayed where it originally settled. Side note ... My clowns host a hammer. Could not care less about the nems.

Interesting. I have 7 hammers all with 3-7 heads and they ignore it. My old pair of clowns before they passed host a Duncan and frogspawn though. I know every clown is different. Hoping mine hosts the hammer or frogspawn..

My 6 year old BTA has gone on 3 walks in that time.
If you don’t change lighting or flow, this helps keep him put.
He’s killed nothing yet and appeared to skirt the corals rather than attack.

Yes, it can and likely will leave the island to find the location it likes best. The ideal spot can be different from nem to nem.

Basically you'll just have to decide if you want to risk it and go in expecting some damage to coral so that you're prepared.

it will move when it wants/feels like to, to where it wants/feels like to.

i’ve been having an ongoing battle with my prized Colorado sunburst BTA and it definitely has killed some SPS and LPS… would always leave its enclosure but i’ll be getting a reefingart acclimation box for it and keep it off to the side at the water line so it won’t slip out. gives me an excuse to buy clowns and put them in it to host

as of now it hasn’t moved in about 3-4 months, but that’s for now i guess lol
