The typical scenario these days for high alkalinity is that you need high nutrients or you'll get "burned" tips (i.e. exposed coral skeleton) but I've not heard of browned out coloration with higher alkalinity (the RTN issue is something to investigate further here though). I'm certainly not advocating the need for higher alkalinity (I typically run my tank at approx 7.5-8.0) but coloration typically seems to be a case of light intensity and/or spectrum; though I'm not really sure I buy into the spectrum completely either as I've played with mine a fair bit and haven't notice any coloration changes).
