It was like swimming in a Reef tank.

I have swam in Florida and Hawaii before but have never seen any thing like this will snorkeling. Before I Even left for Okinawa for the summer I decided the first thing I was going to do was snorkel by a reef. Today was my first day out and I did just that. It was worth forgetting the sunscreen and getting the sunburn. :frusty: Picture can not explain the amazingness of swimming in the world larges Marine tank the Ocean.

It's quite unfortunate to see how completely bare the reef actually is. Years ago, this reef would've been COVERED in thriving corals.

I do not know if this sparsely populated Reef is from human decimation or storm damage Mike but if you can find and snorkel off the Leeward side of the Island you should find a much more populated and diverse Reef. The Hawaiian Islands still show major damage from Hurricane Iniki back in the early 90's.

Thanks Everyone, I used a friends go pro I was surprised on how the pics came out. I will post more pic's after next time I go out. This is something I'm going to soaked up as much as I can as long as the weather permits with days offs. Defiantly more to come.

Thanks for the tip, I have been trying to do some research on some good spots. As close as I am I don't want to miss any amazing Reefs.
When I was in Hawaii back in 98 I don't see as anything close to this but it my have been the spots I went. I was also new to snorkeling. The fish population was amazing. The best part was swimming about 15ft down with a school of 20 or so huge Angel looking fish these guys must have been over a foot in radius.

I think the coral didn't get as big because this spot get effected by lower tides. At lower tides when the water gets a couple inches above thr reef they close the area, because you would not be able to get to the deeper water with out walking on the reef. There was a small piece of coral about every 2 ft. and on the vertical wall where it was deeper there was bigger colonies .

Could you possibly have them turn the blues up some to make the corals pop on your next trip out :tongue:

I was pleased to have partly sunny skies on a day off. I can only imagine what it would be like with blue lighting. The 12th pic has a small acro that had an amazing bright sky blue to it but the light and the blue background bleached out the blue on the acro in th pic.
