So today after battling a evil green hIr algae outbreak. This is the outcome.

Total darkness for 48 hours. Along with a chemi clean treatment for cyano.

If this doesn't work. It's pull the LR.

Scrub it. Dip it. And a dark closet for 5-7 days. In a bucket with a power head.

Utter sadness.

You should have gotten emerald crabs.

Crabs are good but in a major outbreak will take a lot of them . There are tons of options out there but lights out is sometimes the best method IMO

I have two emerald crabs. One is probably the hugest one I ever saw.
A mixture of about 15 snails. Not to mention about 30 baby snails.

We have tied everything. I hope this 1-2 punch helps.

Somewhere something is leeching. I need to eradicate it. Or I will have a very cool green hair algae tank. Not exactly what I was going for.

Phosphates may be high

They read zero. And even did a low level. Came back none. I test. Even second guess and take to LFS and they check. Parameters all seem with in good limits.

I've read that the algae consumes the phosphates and that is why they could be reading zero. Lights out helps but you may want to use a phosphate reduction tool like GFO or something else. Good luck. Sea urchins work wonders too..

A waterfall algae scrubber properly sized will fix your algae problem. Turbo has a great thread in the DIY section.

I have a brs gfo and carbon dual reactor. And I changed the media out 14 days ago. And this is the result. A massive outbreak.

Just throw some gfo in there and replace every week. I guarantee it'll kill off the algae.

But if course fix why you had it in the first place

I have thought about a scrubber. I just don't think I have the room.

I need to do more research if this doesn't work.

where are the nutrients that are feeding your algae bloom coming from?

I honestly wish I knew. All I can figure is from the LR. I went as far as practically starving my tank. And it was still going on. Now we feed every other day. And only miso shrimp. And I drain the juice after they thaw. Before introducing them to the fish. And coral.

It will work but may take a lot more than 48 hours.

kill the lights and suspend all feedings.

(little late don't use chemi clear or any other chemicals).

I had a tank that took 2 weeks once then all the sudden in 3 days it was crystal clear.

After it clears up resume with say 1/2 lighting and feeding and adjust so things thrive (more) but the water doesn't cloud up (less).

Eventually you will have the acceptable amounts of light and feedings that keeps things healthy and clear.

Check your RODI too. MY last outbreak with your same symptoms was that. Needed a new Membrane, and I learned always buy dow or spectrapure, the others just don't stack up.. Hope all goes well...
+1 on the algae using up the phosphates, I use blue life phosphate rx, way way cheaper and easier than GFO.

I had cyano so bad in my 3yr old 26g. Tried 72hrs lights out twice in a month. Tried ChemiClean twice in one month. 100% water changes. Ran GFO & PhosGaurd. Still my SB & back wall would be covered. I only had 2 fish! 5yrs reefing and never had cyano like this. Terrible! I feel your pain
I finally gave up and upgraded to a 40B

My RO/DI tds is reading 0-1. I have the chemi clean working. And it's been about 28 hours completely covered. And to be honest I am not seeing much change there is still green hair algae like it's not having any effect.

Not even sure the chemi is working. It's still pretty bad in my sump.

Might do a water change. After 24/30 hours. Then try again in a week with chemi clean.

Chemi clean is some bad stuff, works but at what cost? How much of you bio filter is it killing? I would highly reccomend several of dr tims products for this. Waste away, refresh, one and only( one time after the chemi clean) and start using bio beads ( dr tims pearls) all bacteria based. I just started using it and have seen tanks that use it with great results
