So today I went to a place who I thought the owner was a friend. Most stuff way overpriced but the quality is good. I bought a frag two weeks ago of a nice tenuis for 30 bucks that was pretty chunky! Owner stated that it was a wild piece and that he had no problem cutting me frags from it anytime. So today I went there and wanted another piece because I liked it and wanted to have a backup. Well now he says it is not a wild piece and that it was a MattV belladonna( which it is not) real one was just released and that he wanted 200 a frag. Also he states he buys from TSA and sells at triple the price they list their SPS frags. I should have done my homework on this store because it’s bounces around all the time closing one location and then ripening in another.

That's the game we play. I really don't care for name and all that nonsense. I see a frag I like i ask the price and depending on the answer is I'll take it or leave it.

I know it sucks trust me I hate this part of reefing but I would just look at it this way. You got 75% discount.

Yea I just walked out and said I wasn’t paying 200 bucks for a wild colony frag that I paid 30 bucks for 2 weeks ago. I was very quite and tried to just get out but he pretty much chased me out calling me names then sending me texts calling me a loser. After all this happened I reached out to some people from my local club and they all stated he was a rip-off artists and did this to a lot of people.

Thank you for the advice! I have been looking at your site for a long time I will be placing an order with you guys as soon as I can
Feel free to shoot us a PM when you're ready. We are more than happy to make you an awesome pack for an awesome price.

I see a lot of named, designer, corals that cost hundreds that are nothing more than well taken care of wild corals.

Look up Bali Shortcake acro. Looks quite a bit like a typical $200 frag that gets sold here, under different names, yet is common. My LFS gave me a great sized frag of it for $20.

Just wait, once mine colors up, I'll be renaming it and selling for $200 for a nib of it. ;-)

MattG corals, coming soon. :) "No, that's not a pc rainbow, thats a whambamthankyoumam from MattG"

Lol. I have a store local to me that names every frag. They just make the names up to make it seem like it is a named piece. That being said, when I came home today with 4 new frags, I discovered that 2 of the 4 I had already purchased from them. Doh. Guess I should have paid more attention to the made up names :)

My LFS guy is awesome. He's going to sell me a JF fox flame and an orange passion for $50 each, once they are ready to frag, and once I've shown my tank can support acros again.

That’s Awsome and a good deal!!

On some of these I completely agree, the prices are crazy for what you get. Its not that I wouldnt pay $500 for a coral, but for that price, it shouldnt fit on my thumbnail either. Some sellers are just trying to cash in. I bought a acro frag at a local shop for $50 that would have been sold as a "mini colony" online and been 4x that plus shipping.

There's one dealer here that will by wild colonies and maricultured stuff the size of a basketball for $150 and then frag the heck out of it and try and clear several grand. I wont even go to his shop anymore, not just for that reason either.

That’s the trend right now that it seems. More of a chop shop ship and flip kinda deal! And because people are buying them up like wildfire I think it’s going to be a trend for a while. But there Awsome sellers like battlecorals, TSA, reefersdirect that are willing to work with you. It’s real sad that some of these prices have gotten so out of hand

I'm not defending all vendors but at the end of the day it's a business. They are trying to make money. I would hate for my work to tell me I could only make "x" amount. They also have to deal with death when shipments come in. I worked for a lfs many years ago and he tried to double his money on your "run of the mill" corals.
If people stop buying, prices will come down. I'm not complaining bcs I'm a person that pays for the rare coral or one that just plain awesome

Being fairly new to keeping corals I am content with the common low cost frags that I find for $5 to $25 each. Maybe that will change in the future, but I seriously doubt I would ever pay over $100 for any coral. But I also think a lot of things are ridiculously marked up in this hobby, including some of the equipment used.

Something a lot of people don’t think about is overhead. Even for a small shop like mine, maintenance and equipment, electricity, advertising, website, payment processing fees, dead loss, shipping costs and supplies, taxes, etc. All of these increase the true “cost” of every coral I sell. And that’s without adding in profit yet. And every business is different in this. Some have more overhead, employees, etc. And yes some do charge a lot for “profit”. But if people are willing to pay it, then it is what it is.

The only way to combat this is to beat them at their own game via better prices.

If I had some of these, ready to go, I'd sell them at a fraction of the price to those that agree to do the same.

I get it! I wish more there were more vendors like yourself. Everything you sell from what I seen on your site is chunky and reasonably priced!!
