Jbj 45 rl versus Innovative Marine 40

Once I finally thought i had made up my mind. I started reading of people who said there jbj 45's had cracked where the curved glass is. I am unsure now on if this is rare or a common occurrence.
Never heard of that? How many people complained of it?

BTW This guy modified his tank for a sump in a really cool way.

I am not sure but i saw a recent post on r2r and looked it up and found that several people had this problem.
So this would be the deciding factor? "Not sure".. Possible shipping damage? Chances are the tank was already cracked. You should google search how many tanks have cracked from either the silicon glue getting old or the tanks where inadequately built. I am sure you'll find negatives on anything you look up. Really though, what are the odds?

BTW that tank from June 15th wasn't the 45 gallon jbj rimless. These tanks have 10mm thick glass. The build is very strong in my experience.

I have had my tank at 8 months I do know guys that have had theirs longer than 2 years ( there is a revision, mainly with the overflows). I love mine. I just finished my overflow and adding a sump. The OEM stand is doing good as well ( I did reinforce it) I'm very happy with it.

I have the 45 jbj so far it is doing fine . I have the 29 for a couple years now no prob. And have has a couple biocubes with bent glass no problem . Think of how many bent / bow front tanks are out there . Your decision just explaining what I have and experience with them . A plane crashed a while back but does that stop you from flying o_O

I like this tank too. I did research for reviews and there are issues due to cracking/breakage of the glass so I went with IM40.

Please stay away from JBJ, my tank cracked in less than 9 months.
I would without a doubt go with a red sea reefer if I had to do it all over again

Just contacted Dr Foster and Smith and was told they can't do anything about it and asked me to contact the manufacturer, totally understandable.
JBJ decided to replace the tank and I was told that they have increase the thickness of the glass from 8mm to 10mm just recently. Now I am really struggling deciding whether I set it up again or just sell the tank.

You always have to check for chips and cracks. I will say the 10mm glass is nice. The tank feels very strong.

I just checked my cracked tank and the corners were less than 4mm due to the curve. Not sure if another 1mm will help
8mm thick glass with 4mm thick curves is ridiculous in my opinion. However, we are talking about 10mm glass now. Your tank was old school. Sorry that happened to you.

I bought my JBJ 45 last June. I had no issues with the glass, what I did have is the back wall bowed in the middle and separated from the silicon and was causing issues. JBJ was great about replacing it. I filled out their form, copy of my order, and sent a picture of the issue. They shipped a replacement tank the next day. Came by freight so took about a week for me to get it. I have been running that one since February and no issues at all. The stand in my opinion is not that great. The first one I got was missing pieces, the 2nd one was fine. However, they both assembled differently, the first one was almost all tiny dowel rods to hold it together. The 2nd was your typical furniture assembly with the cams. I would have never trusted the first one to hold anything so glad it was missing pieces.

I'm about to get a Red Sea Reefer XL425, but I will be keeping the JBJ 45 up in the same room, just on a different wall.

Red Sea reefer is the way to go! Just wish they would get rid of that fuggly black silicon.

Happy that I found this thread!

I am contemplating between the JBJ 45 and IM 40. Anyone have updates on their tanks and how they've held up?

If they're still up and running pictures are appreciated!

I have the older version of the JBJ 45 that I have had since 2015. I added a external overflow to it and a trigger systems sump in the stand. Everything’s been fine with it all this time got no complaints.
Here is a picture of it that I just took just for this comment.

Thanks for the reply.

Glad to see it's held up well. The comments about the curved edges cracking had me a little worried but figured it was only a few isolated issues.

What lights are you running?
