In the process of upgrading my 20 gallon long tank.
Don’t want to go more the 50 gallons as reefing isn’t my only hobby.
The 40 breeder would be turned into a AIO with the fiji cube aio kit peninsula style.
Can they both have the same amount livestock(max fish)?
Really want a coral beauty but not sure if it would do well in a cube tank.

Stock would be 2, occ clowns, 6 line wrasse, shrimp and goby pair, skunk cleaner shrimp ,MAYBE royal gramma and ( coral beauty)??

I already have a soft coral tank with the 2 clowns and 6 line. Any feedback would be appreciated!

Drill it! And use the 20 as a sump!

That's my setup!

The eshopps overflow would cost the same as the Fiji aio kit. Then you'd be able to hide all your equipment.

I think your stocking list is okay.

Accidentally quoted myself when trying to edit my first post, sorry bout that

Yeah petco has a sale going on right now for the 40 breeder trying to decide before it ends.

the 40 gallon would be from petco during there sale. read online that Aqueon uses tempered glass during the sale to keep up with the sale demands. kinda scared to drill it lol. Also i like the idea of aio due to keeping it simple.

Jbj makes GREAT tanks. check out EAT SLEEP REEF on YouTube, maybe the best example of what’s possible with a 45g I’ve ever seen.
yeah huge fan of his channel.
That's what made me want to get the jbj just worried about the footprint of the tank with some fish

I have drilled a cpl 40br i got from petco sale. YT the tempered glass trck can do it right in the store to make sure you can drill the end you want.
I believe all bottoms are tempered and yes sometimes a side or to CAN be, but easy to check and see.

both are nice I love the foot print of the 40br + if you make it peninsula even better peninsula are they way to go IMHO! so my vote is for the 40br.with the 2oL sump. that system will last you for years to come. IMHO one of the best back for you buck set up out there.
check out the fiji cubes new thin external overflow that would look so sick on a peninsula 40br.

Thanks for the advice ill make sure to look up the trick!

I bought mine from Petco as well. Though this was maybe 6 or 7 years ago o_O

I agree though, dollar for dollar, the setup is one of, if not the best.

This is mine as it sits now. I'm bringing it back online after it sat in storage while I was stationed overseas. Don't mind the mess!!

looks awesome. I really don't want a sump but might bite the bullet and just drill the tank manly for a refugium.

Yes, more questions lol. @Devaji got me looking into external overflows now. Really love the sleek look. I was completely sold on a all in one, but now questions that.

Well, you mentioned you mentioned wanting to stock the tank heavily (though I think your stocking list was fine), but you could always get an oversized skimmer to keep up with your bioload. Plus, you can have a fuge, or a frag tank, or just a random section down there. Another thing. With an AIO you're removing space in the display to store equipment. With a sump, you're adding water volume. Plus, one of the best things ever is.... Depending on your wavemaker, you may have ZERO wires coming out of the top of the display tank.

Neither option is a bad option, I just think the sump is a better option!

yeah been doing a lot of research on how to set up an overflow/sump might do that over the fiji cube aio kit.
thinking about grabbing this overflow and taking a shot at drilling my first tank.

I like my JBJ 45. I got it as my first tank about a year and a half ago. As a newbie it seemed simple and easy to set up compared to having a sump. Only real drawback to me would be the dimensions, a little more length and less height would be cool.

ha I was going to link to the fiji cube ext. overflows. I think that along with a sump is better than an AIO dont get my wrong I have the fiji cube nano AIO and I do like it but on a 40br the sump is just a "better" long term option IMHO. you can grow you system out over the years to come. heck can even to a 40br DT and a 40BR sump that would give you 65ish gallons of water volume.

OR...if you want to spend the coin and still want a 36" tank SCA, waterbox, fijicube and other make some pretty nice rimless tanks. just saying I would pause for a bit and really think about what you want long term.
but all in all the 40br are still the best bank for your buck!
