I like my JBJ 45. I got it as my first tank about a year and a half ago. As a newbie it seemed simple and easy to set up compared to having a sump. Only real drawback to me would be the dimensions, a little more length and less height would be cool.

Yeah those are the two main concerns i have about getting the 45. Beautiful tank! What kind of toadstool is that on the top right?

Thanks! It’s a long polyp green, not really sure about where it comes from but I got it from Cherry Corals. Here it is next to my regular green toadstool. It has much bigger polyps and is brighter.

ha I was going to link to the fiji cube ext. overflows. I think that along with a sump is better than an AIO dont get my wrong I have the fiji cube nano AIO and I do like it but on a 40br the sump is just a "better" long term option IMHO. you can grow you system out over the years to come. heck can even to a 40br DT and a 40BR sump that would give you 65ish gallons of water volume.

OR...if you want to spend the coin and still want a 36" tank SCA, waterbox, fijicube and other make some pretty nice rimless tanks. just saying I would pause for a bit and really think about what you want long term.
but all in all the 40br are still the best bank for your buck!
I get what your saying. i'm pretty much convinced on the sump just scared of cracking the tank lol.

I have a JBJ45RL AIO. My 1st tank was a JBJ28 RL. I would go with the option of drilling and a sump. I should have learned my lesson on the 1st AIO
I will never do another AIO. Too limited and hard to do anything maintenance wise. Definitely would save the money to do tank with sump if I could go back.

I am about to start the build thread on my IM 100INT with a Triton 36 sump.

Sorry for the double photos, don't know how I did that.

Really liking the Barnacle Clusters was thinking about ordering some from reefcleaners wasn't to sure. But i like how they look in your tank.

Eventually I wanted a little group of barnacle blennies

I have drilled 2 petco 40br 1st one I cracked 2nd one was good.
there are lots of threads on how to do it.
cliff notes are:
~good quality bit
~use template
~set your clutch on your drill
~use putty to pool water -or running water if out side
~loosely tape underside to catch glass as well and towels inside tank.
~dont push or are grinding not cutting

best of luck bud!

yeah been doing a lot of research on how to set up an overflow/sump might do that over the fiji cube aio kit.
thinking about grabbing this overflow and taking a shot at drilling my first tank.

I did exactly this and I love it. Drilling the tank was also one of my biggest fears since I never drilled a tank before. It was so easy and actually a lot faster than I thought. Just keep the bit wet and let the bit do the work. Fiji provides a templet in their kit. One of the reasons I used the Fiji overflow is their customer service. It was great. They were the only company to respond to my emails when I was researching which overflow. The quality is also very good and I am happy I chose them. you will not regret it. Sorry for all the pics just figured this might help tour decision. It is also super slim and takes up no space.

Is the overflow supposed to be that high?

i have jbj45. check out my build thread.

although i love my tank, i would much rather drill a 40b and have a sump with refugium.

not to mention the footprint of the 40b is so much better than a cube

I didn’t want to drill my 40b tank so I used a lifereef overflow and it has been working fine.

Bumping an old thread, but I am curious what you ended up going with?
