I have a 16 gallon nuvo so its probably 14 gallons of actual volume and Im looking to add a wave maker. Trying to decide between the RW4 and RW8. The reason I was considering the larger RW8 is that I would like to have really broad directional flow it says it goes down to 180GPH which would be fine in a 14 gallon but wouldnt have much room to go up. I'm guessing the RW4 will probably be the better choice. Anyone have experience with these on small tanks?

No experience with smaller tanks, but I'm pretty sure the RW-8s will be way too big. They put out a tremendous amount of flow. RW-4s would probably be a more appropriate size.

RW 4 will be more than enough, run one in my Biocube 14 and I have to keep it at next to the lowest setting.. Great wave maker!

rw8 goes down low enough to work just fine and physically isn't a ton bigger, but it is bigger and will likely be a focal point in a 14 gallon tank due to its size. if you want the option of an upgrade I would go with the rw8. if you think your going to stick to nano tanks, the rw4 is just fine.

Thanks, I guess Ill give the RW8 a try first and see how it goes. I've got one locally that I can pick up for cheap instead of buying new. If its too strong I guess Ill go down to the RW4. I was actually worrying the RW4 might even be too strong which is why I was looking at the tunze 6040(Says it is suitable for tanks as small as 10 gallons).

I used a rw8 at half power in a 29. level 1 or 2 would be fine in your tank but you can only use w1 or constant. pretty sure even w2 will throw water out of your tank.

I had 2 rw8s in my 55 gallons and I had to run them at the lowest power level and there was only 1 mode that I could use because they would move the water too much. I forget what mode that was but basically 1 is on then off then the other one is on....reef crest maybe.
I would suggest 1 rw4 and if that is too much get a 12v a adapter

I have 1 RW-4 on my nuvo 30 long and I have it in the lowest speed cause it's too powerful, I think the Rw-8 would be just too much for a 16 nuvo imo.

Okay I guess the RW8 is out. So RW4 vs tunze 6040. I'm really looking for a slow large volume wave nothing powerful. Seems like the tunze might be the way to go because it can go from very low flow to higher. I see also these pumps are DC? so I need to purchase a DC/AC adapter?

I have rw-4 in my 75 and plenty of flow actually i bought one while i was having an mp-40 wet side warranty out due to linkia starfish going into powerhead but thats another story (happened twice now) ...anyways replaced the mp40 with rw4 and havent changed it back since have a brabd new wet side sitting for mp40 and havent used it lol

Seems the consensus is that the RW4 is too powerful for the NUVO. So that leaves the tunze 6040 not many seem to have experience with this pump.

Maybe just try a good return pump and just have a nice nozzle on it. Should be enough flow just from that

I have the rw-8 in a 29 gallon sps tank at full power. The rw-4 might work if you're going sps. If you go with the good return pump option get an eductor. They increase flow quite a bit.

I do run my rw 4 at full speed in pulse mode ...im sure it can be dialed down to be perfect actually im pretty sure the tank that sold me on them in my lfs wa around the 14 gal size and had water moving very nicely ...plus communicate wirelessly which plus for two master n slave

I have a RW4 on a 29 biocube, with a MJ1200 (295 GPH) in the back. I run the RW-4 at about 1/2 speed in W1. I wouldn't run it wide open, too much! So I would say go with the RW4 on you 14.

I have an RW-8 in my 20 long one the second wave mode about half way up in power. The tank is bare bottom. I crank it all the way up before I do a water change to knock loose any detritus stuck in the rocks, works perfectly. It's the only flow in my tank as I don't have a sump or skimmer. The RW-4 should be sufficient for a 14G though, but as mentioned above, if you ever plan to upgrade to a larger tank you may want to consider the 8.
