JK1's floating reef

Thank you. I now have all of my stock in apart from zoas. I need to frag them onto zoa stones which I'll do this weekend. I've mounted all of my SPS so it's beginning to take shape. It's going to take some to get the quality of my stock back to where I want it. I had everything in a temporary set up which ended up lasting six months! I lost more than I care to calculate and what I saved has suffered but will be nursed back.

I switched out the bulbs for ATI bulbs which has made a big difference to the colour. The light was too white and flat before. I want to get some proper pics of everything so I can document the recovery process but I've misplaced my camera charger in the move, hope to find it soon.

I thought one of my fish was nipping but I may have been wrong, it could be a pep shrimp causing the issue. Both fish I suspected are in and all lps are inflating more than they have in months. The pep lives in my frag tank now which is lps free. I hope I'm right as I love my purple tang and harlequin tusk.

I thought my SPS were going to fill all available space as it was looking pretty full before moving my colonies over. After mounting them I'm pleased to find I still have loads of space to play with. I'll let everything settle and then look forward to some shopping.

Still have a lot to do. Need to install my ORP controller and doser. The sump needs organising and all cables neatening, plugs labelling etc. Once the acans have settled a bit more I'll be taking the gryphon to them and mounting. I'm actually looking forward to mounting them, it's usually a huge stress because I've always had them on sloping rock work. This time I can simply remove the islands and mount them say at my desk with everything in a tub. No cursing at failing epoxy, no reaching, no being bitten my clowns and no skimmer fallout from epoxy pollution.

I have everything needed equipment wise but will upgrade the lights to an ATI hybrid and the gyre to a pair of MP40W QDs when funds allow. I've totally overspent to reach this stage so will let finances recover first. I may change my mind if I manage to sell all my old equipment and tanks. I've got quite a lot to shift.

I think I have another couple of weeks worth of grafting to get it all set up but then I can begin to do what I've missed so badly for 6 months, sit and enjoy the tank! Plus I now get to do it whilst sipping beer in my cave :) it feels good to be back!

Thanks for reading, here is where I am now.

Oh now it's really starting to take shape! NICE!

Thank you for posting this. I'm in the process of setting up a floating reef as well.
I'm trying to source shelf pieces, similar to what you have. Though, I will add some live rock above the shelf rock.

Your reef looks amazing!

Interesting look but I don't think it looks natural at all. Sorry. Maybe it will look better down the road when the corals are filled out.

Looks good, I'm about to scape my 90 and I really like how you pulled off the floating shelves and am interested in doing something similar.

I really like how you did that.
