I have lids on all of my tanks and the only fish who have jumped did so either when they were very small or when they saw an opportunity. My first Ruby Red Dragonet female jumped presumably while mating and managed to get through the mesh but couldn’t get back into the tank. Same thing with a Diamond Goby… there was even a glass lid on that tank but he fit through a small opening along the edge. One of my Helfrichi Firefish jumps when the lid is off and has landed in the return chamber of my Evo (just barely big enough for my hand to fit in) and another time he landed right in the bucket while I was doing a water change. I guess he liked the old water better. Lol
My best fish jumping story is my male Spotcinctus Clown… that tank has a solid acrylic lid but is in sort of a high traffic area. He gets spooked at random times and will hit the lid. One night, I was doing maintenance and had just given my (very spoiled) dog some treats on the floor near the tank. She left them unattended and walked away. The second I reached into the tank, the clown jumped right over my shoulder and landed on the carpet next to my dog’s abandoned treats. I screamed. She came running & I thought she was going to grab my fish. She was only worried that he was going to steal her treats… she grabbed them very quickly and ran away to eat them, ignoring the fish. I picked him up and put him back in the tank. He still jumps all the time but now I know to expect it.
