JUMPING around?

My Blue spot jawfish years ago found the sliver of a opening that I made for the screen to go around my light arms . I found him after tile surfing the next morning . Most recently about six months ago I took my lid off to siphon my sand bed and I had a wardi goby decide to grab some altitude and fortunately he landed back in the tank with no issues . Think he was practicing for a upcoming sea world show . As far as difficulty making the dyi kit I personally didn’t care to for the dyi part . I found it to be tedious making the measurements and getting the cuts perfect around the light holder stands . Maybe if it was just a big rectangle it wouldn’t have been to bad but I did it . Next time I’ll hire someone to do it , life is short . But I will tell you the screen has been a life saver . A couple of weeks ago I was messing with my light schedule and if not for the screen I would have had a spooked foxface hit the floor.
Good luck !!!
Jeez foxfaces stress me out with their stress always seem to be spooked by something!!

Oh wow… I had no idea lions were jumpers! My little one will sit near the food opening in my tank (has a 3D printed grate over it) but now Im paranoid about her jumping! Mine is a red sea max, so “sump” is in the back with a large wall plus my lid. Never had a fish jump, but I have had them jump from my acclimation containers!!
the dwarf versions are notorious for taking the leap

Ugh!! Ill have to watch mine. I love her way too much to lose her!!! Shes in my 70 gallon with a custom lid, and made sure I have no holes! Shes one of my favorites and Im very attached to her!!!

Mine was freshwater and pretty sad but interesting. I had a cat that kept going behind tank that housed a young arrowana and messing with wires and stuff. Me loving cats like I do placed a few mouse traps behind the tank as a deterant. (cats love mouse traps for those of you that need to train your cats. They work pretty well with dogs and young children also :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing:) . See where this is going ;) You guessed arrowana jumped flopped and ended up caught in a mouse trap. It was fish jerky by the time I found it.

Also lost a huge huge arrowana years ago. Heard a crash late at night but didn't get up.
I'm a heavy sleeper.
Marine fish wise, lost 4 cleaner wrasses over the years. 2 ended up in my sump 2 on the floor. Threw the sump ones back in. I suppose they jumped again because one day they just weren't there anymore.
They were pretty hard to come by and my angels loved them so I'd keep replacing them when I could.

My jumper was my favourite the mandarin goby, left the net cover open one morning by 100 mm. I didn't realise till I didn't see him for a few days and then the light bulbs moment came. That day I left the cover open I came home and my dog had vomited pretty much all his stomach out in the hallway. I learned about the poisonous mucus coat of mandarins this way. Dog is fine, fish not:crying-face:

Oh no - elegant 3-4ft beasts !!

I lost a tiny male clownfish through a teeny tiny gap by my heater. Had a pintail wrasse jump out while I was doing a water change. It landed on another part of the lid but I didn’t see him till it was too late. I was heartbroken. He was my favorite fish at the time. Hard lessons to learn.

We all acquire fish and build our collection and suddenly one or even two fish are missing. Often we forget the potential for fish to jump. There are some popular jumpers in this hobby such as dart fish, firefish gobies, in fact many gobies, at times clown fish, anthias fish and of course eels. In some cases , some merely slip through the overflow boxes and appear to be gone and are swimming in the overflow or take the journey through the drain pipe and end up in the sump. Snails even escape from the top.

What fish have been your jumpers and where did you find them?
How have you safeguarded to prevent a reoccurrence?

Mine have been both dartfish and firefish gobies as well as a recent snowflake clown. I have screens on the way as I relied on my canopy to prevent escape from tank. I in the past had a couple of hermit crabs even find their way out.

My male clown that was 3 years old jumped out of the tank. And the sad thing was I had a cover on the way

I’ve lost 2 Diamond Gobies, a Watchman Goby and a Clownfish In the past year. All but 1 jumped while cleaning and had lid off and I didn’t realize until too late. One of the Diamond Gobies jumped shortly after I put him in the tank - forgot to put the little feeder lid back in place and found him on top of the lid several hours later.

I now put a piece of foam core that’s about 3” longer than my tank’s width and about 10” wide with cutouts for the light arms. It overlaps the back inside lip of the tank and rests against the wall when I have the lid off. This way nobody can land behind the tank. I also have a piece of plexiglass to cover the half of the tank I’m not working on. This and many roll calls while working seems to help.

I see all the clownfish post, funny I was at a lfs and saw a clownfish jump from one tank to the next, I thought whoa, I didn't know clownfish jumped like that.

I think some have a pilot's license as theyre good at flying

Lost an orange back fairy wrasse who decieded he wanted to go to the big reef in the sky instead of being subjected to the horrors of me pulling a rock :/

And a flashing tilefish who im still mad about because i only had him for four days and he managed to perfectly torpedo himself through a 1/4" gap in my mesh net... and turned into fish jerky when i was out :(

Now i have a custom made acrylic and mesh cover... because im gonna be gettin some fish i would probably never get over if they became jerky

Definitely a handful of jumps with lid on.

Cat runs in everytime like “DID IT HAPPEN THIS TIME!?!?”

He was here when the tank was young.

Ugh - my one and only jumper loss was a diamond goby on a 55 gallon I had a long time ago. At that time I had everything hang-on-back so I had a lid with small cutouts around the stuff that hung on the back. And I mean those cutouts were NARROW. I truly, till this day, have no idea how it go out those small gaps…short of jumping exactly perfectly, getting its head through and then using it’s pectoral fins to drag the rest of it out (lol) I don’t know howwwwww he did it. Found him the next morning on the floor and was so so so sad. I still feel bad for the poor guy. #Ptsd.

Seconds after I removed the lid at feeding time my female japanese swallowtail wanted to be first to eat. She cleared the top by 3 inches right in front of me. Landed on her side on the carpet two feet from the tank about 4 1/2 feet down. I picked her up and returned her to the tank. She just went right back to eating, like nothing ever happened.
Is that a good fish? It’s on my stocking list as they’re supposedly “reef safe”

I once had an anglerfish that couldn’t really swim. One morning before going to work I checked the tank and found him next to the tank. Dried out… :(

Nothing more disappointing than carpet surfers.

I suffered a few in recent years; it's really the only way I've lost fish in recent years.
