Dry rock is for landscaping and cichlids. In all seriousness, dry rock can be great for seasoned reef keepers, but it just isn't the right choice for new keepers who want to enjoy reef keeping, without having excessive coral death in the first two years. Seeing those acros wither away into skeletons as white as the rock behind them can put people out of the hobby.

After seeing this thread, I did get a chuckle out of this part of the definition of ‘not joke’ from urban dictionary:
