I think the advice about not only using one is some really sound advice! I would use Triton as my main test because they have quite the reputation of accuracy in both the US and Europe.

I wonder about the tin results, how they measure it, and if it matters. It seems every ICP test regardless of source reports high tin. I just got my ATI ICP back and it reported similar with tin being high.

Not true. many do not. Mine did not.

IMO, the heavy metals may be a concern, and I'd look for ways to avoid or export them,. nickel, vanadium, tin. The source may not be the same for each, bit look for metal parts in the water and maybe try something like metasorb.

Thank you sir. I’ll order some MetaSorb now. I’m completely puzzled on what is the cause at this time. I’ve checked everything and I’ve found zero rusty or corroded parts. The only other thing I could think of is the black crushed coral substrate as I swear I saw something about black substrate leaching metals. I can’t remember if that write up was about sand or crushed coral though.

@Randy Holmes-Farley and everyone else that has helped with my metal issues. I think I finally found my issue. I pulled every pump and anything that possibly had metal in it today and cleansed it. I started cleaning my glass and the inside section hit a rock and sunk to the bottom. I found the inside section of my magfloat glass cleaner was half full of water. When I remove it from my tank dark water that looked just like rusty water dripped out. MetaSorb will be here in the morning so hopefully the problem has been found and the MetaSorb will remove the residuals in the water colum.

Fair enough - just a few of the posts the last past couple of weeks seems the ATI is reporting elevated tin. Those not reporting I'm sure are greater than those that do so I see your point.

In my case I have no metal let alone tin parts and the RI/RO water sample they did came back with no signs. So not sure what is going on so incorrectly assumed it is maybe something they are doing or measuring that I can't.

From what if found out lately is Tin is used in magnets. So if you have anything with a magnet in or near your tank you have the possibility of Tin. The biggest culprit from my reading are the mag veggie clips as of lately have been found as the culprit next in line is magfloat glass cleaners as I learned today. My lfs ( well as local as a hour away ) tonight filled me in on this. He sells both the big hitters but also offers other products. This guy spent a small fortune on a new glass cleaner as I was not about to give magfloat another chance.

@Hitman interesting you point that out. I actually have a pair of Maxspect Gyre's and one is on the overflow side so the magnet is inside the overflow box. I also have a two little fishes algae clip... So two sources of magnets for which I didn't note above. Interesting to say the least especially since the tank is relatively new. Cycle completed in March and moved my existing tank over the middle of April. So algae clip and gyre are only 5 or 6 months old and no damage. I just checked both.

I'd be surprised if Tin can leach though without damage casing but you did give me something to think about.

Edit: I also have a glass cleaner from Tunz care - the large one.

I might be wrong but I swear I was told that the Maxspec magnets on the out side should not get wet as they are not epoxy coated like the ones for the inside of the tank. I wanted to put my xf280 like you have yours and I was told that but I can’t remember who told me. I just looked at both of my TLF veggie clips. 1 is 1 month old the other is 4 months old and guess what! Both have moisture behind the white pad that goes against the glass! Looks like my Tangs and Angels are going back to eating off a rock with nori strips rubber banded to it :mad:

I remember asking about clips and algae magnets with metal blades in a recent thread, the consensus seemed to be that they aren't an issue. You could always double check and see what the magnets/scrapers are made out of with the companies in question just to rule it out?

I use cheapo- suction cup algae clips with no metal components to be on the safe side.

Per my lfs both of my failed products have Tin in the magnets.

Thanks @Hitman I'll email Maxspect and see what they say. I didn't send a test before I installed it so really don't have anything to compare I can, however, remove it and see if it goes down over time while I wait for their reply. I was actually considering removing one for a bit to adjust the flow so could always use it has a spare in between cleanings. I double checked my RI/RO results from the sample I sent in and there is no tin reading. So something is obviously leeching it and I can't believe it is the pukani rock.

And I have not seen any magic fairies sprinkling tin dust over my tank so maybe you are on to something
