Kat's Esoteric Biotope

BTW, this is my main tank.

I did a water change and siphoned out some gunk. Been experimenting with adding different fountain pumps as a powerhead. Stock pump is 55gph, ordered an 80gph pump upgrade. New lights arrive Monday. Yay.

Return pump upgraded to 80gph. Stock pump is rated for 55gph but I put it as a powerhead and it is weaker than the 47gph that is still in there. Maybe it needs a good cleaning, I'll have to check. I stirred up some crap and the filtration is much improved! So happy about that.

In other news, I am still cursed when it comes to Blue Clove Polyps. Island of Tiki sent me an enormous box of them, even had an ice pack. But they really really don't like shipping. I've now had 4 shipments, including an overnight shipment that did not make it. I have to find this locally somewhere.

Everything in this tank now depends on what happens on this tree. My backup plan of zoanthids might have to be activated. The blue cloves would have been a stunning contrast. Blue ochtodes are more purple, not as bright as the blue cloves. Green anything is out of the question. Yellow would be wonderful and Pink a second choice.

Sigh.

Lighting upgraded!

3 eco pico strips and a dual ramp timer.
Now I have sunrise and sunset, moonlight on a controller.

Besides the lighting upgrade, pump upgrade, and addition of a small pump as a powerhead, I've been thinking about what to do for the foliage on the tree.

I had a frag of some non descript zoas in my other tank and I fragged it up to glue a few polyps on the tree branches, here and there. The result is not what I was hoping. There is too much glue showing for such small polyps. Of course when they fill out the glue will be covered but in the mean time it looks like a bird made a nest. ha ha. The color of these polyps is pretty drab so I'm going to chalk this up to an experiment for the time being. I'm hoping some brighter polyps like eagle eyes will work better.

However I'm also SERIOUSLY considering removing the GSP from the bottom and glueing it to the branches. It would be absolutely perfect, waving in the wind like leaves.
At that point, the bottom gets sand for a contrast.

Any thoughts on that?

Oh, and here's a picture of the polyps on the branches experiment.

I caved. Sliced off some white pumping xenia from my main tank and draped a few heads on the branches of the tree. They've been falling all over and I keep trying to wedge them somehow so that they have a chance to attach. No luck so far but still trying.

I'm making a bush like structure with Gsp and I put zoas on the rock around it and it's supposed to represent flowers. I think it looks good and I can't wait till it fills out.

I like the idea of the gsp on the tree.
The test branch/frag is looking good, but it's a few polyps you know, so it looks well behaved. I supposed when it takes over the tree it will be a great bushy tree. Maybe that is not so bad.
So far the Xenia is still trying to make up its mind if it wants to be on the tree or not.

Would love to see pictures whenever you have them.
