Kessil H380 Grow Light is Crazy Good!

I run my DIY led fixture oin 80 par, spectrum is probably similiar but I have a hint of green in mine.

Here is what a fist size ball of chateo will grow to in just a few weeks with even a severely under sized sump like mine with these lights.

Edit....right at 4 weeks.

I run the h380 over my refugium and between that light and Triton core7 my chaeto exploded. It's a very thick, very dense mat and I couldn't be happier. I actually get a PH bump overnight versus a drop.

I started running the core7 a few weeks ago and my No3 is getting crazy high. I have been looking into buying either a h80 or h380 for my refugium but wasn’t sure if I should spend the money on the h380. It sounds like everyone is having great experience with the h380.

My main question is how high are you guys mounting the light above your refugium. I’m estimating mine will sit roughly 12 -14 inches above my fuge. Will that be ok? Or should will it be to much PAR for the algae?

At first, I wanted to have as high par as possible and I had the h380 only few inches off the water. I cooked my chaeto. lol. I now have it hang around 10-12 inches above water on a 40 gallon breeder tank.

But you would recommend the h380 to grow chaeto?

If you have the money, for sure. However, quite a few other people also report great success with some grow lights that they got from Amazon. I have not have a chance to try those cheapy ones myself. So, I can't give you a comparison on how well they compare.

I just bought one, its quite loud?

You can hear the fan on it, but mine is in a sump with a skimmer that is just a tad bit louder so it gets drowned out. The fan noise is comparable to their other lights.

I can hear mine from across the room. By far the loudest item on the tank. LFS has A360s set up that are silent.

If it is that loud I would consider contacting Kessil, it is an improved fan design over the A360 I believe so it should not be noticeably louder. Sound is tricky though, what may be quiet to me is noisy to another :)

No, mine is completely silence. I can only tell the fan is running by putting my hand on it.

But I have read other forum post saying that theirs are running loud.

I really cannot tell any noise when it is on. I get really close to it and I can hear the internal fan but it is definitely not loud. I would call Kessil if it were me. It sure looks like the standard fans you find in any power supply. My guess would be that the fan bearing is going out and they can easily replace it.

As for cooking the chaeto...mine will turn white on top when the fuge gets full and cannot tumble. You can also manually rotate the cheato every week or so which seems to help....or move the light a little higher. For me it is just an indicator to harvest 3/4 of it and take it to the LFS for credit!

Does H380 run hot? I got a 54w COB grow light led off eBay, and it's producing great chaeto grow. But it's also insanely hot. It drives my sump temperature to 90F. I'm thinking of getting a H380 if it runs cooler.

Can't speak for the H380 but my 360WE on my display puts out not heat whatsoever.

Did any of you experience your chaeto turning white? Mine doesnt tumble in my sump due to its setup, strands which where closest to the light turned bleached white. I also had the unit on 24/7
I first tried running my H380 24/7 and got the same result. 12 hours is more than enough light and stops the cheato from turning white.

My mars hydro was so powerful it stripped my tank too clean in like 2 weeks. That was running it for 12 hours opposite.
