Kole Tang

A kole would definitely benefit from a 20g qt over a 10g. But I would strongly suggest waiting until the 75g is up and running before even getting the tang. Especially since a tang should be one of the last fish added, so even though the 75g wilp be setup in a couple months and cycled a few weeks after that, it should still take several more months to stock that tank, far too long of a period of time for a kole tang to be housed in a 20g.

I wouldn't be overly concerned about the Hawaiian ornamental fishery. The stoppage is an injunction to look at the evidence of sustainability. Hawaii is the best regulated ornamental fishery. It will reopen.

I have a mature kole tang in my 75, and he is doing very well. Hes more od a grazer than a swimmer. Spends his time picking at the rocks and glass. Personally, i think youd be fine with one in your 75.

Just be careful. I've always heard that Tangs are Ich magnets. I got one last year to be the last fish added. Didn't quarantine him, and within days, he got ich and my entire tank crashed. Lesson learned.....ALWAYS QUARANTINE! Just my 2 cents [emoji846]

That really sucks. I've had my share of ich (still deal with it) so definitely fixing my quarantine process.

I'll probably set up a 20g then. Thanks!

Ugh! I have on in a 90 gallon tank now and if you live near LA you can come get him and take him home!! I always wanted one and a couple years ago I got one and I hate him. Sorry, but I do. He bullies everybody in the tank. I have a purple tang that is the boss of the tank and every once in awhile the Koles will decide he is gonna challenge the purple. The purple always puts him in his place but I just can't stand how he is always trying to bully everybody for no reason, just because they crossed his path.

Sorry I know it is a personality issue but I am cycling a new 100 gallon tank and when it is ready, all my fish are going in except that dang tang!

But yes, he does help keep everything clean and puts kissy marks on the glass trying to get the algae that might be there.

Love my Kole. I had a bully damsel yellow tail and the Kole put him in his place quick. Had hair algae starting to grow in the display and once the Kole was added, the algae was gone in a week. He loves to graze the rocks, glass, and sand all day long.

They seem like awesome fish!

That really stinks. Good luck on your tank!

I have a kole in a 60 cube. It was the 2nd to last addition to my tank. My last addition was a sunburst anthias, and the kole tang almost chased him out of the tank.

I printed out a huge picture of a yellow tang and taped it to the side of my tank and scared all my fish for about a week, then everyone seemed to get along better :p

I kept a kole in a 75 gallon and do not think I would do that again. They get pretty big pretty fast and they have a large territory and defend it. They move quick and scare other fish. It used to constantly attack my clarkii clowns and get stung by their anemone. He was fine it was just the other fish were not.

He literately tried to kill any new fish once established other than a few varieties. I had to rescue several fish.

He was fine once moved to a 6 foot tank.
