Doesnt look like a cowrie to me. google is saying it's a sea hare or sea slug. curious what more knowledgeable people say.

Look more like a ragged shaggy sea hare..aka Bursatella lecchii. eats green algae, cyanobacteria etc. This oner comes from gulf coast and warm waters off Florida and other areas...Hope this helps...

If it's acowrie, you can touch it and it will peel its mantle back, revealing its smooth shell--if it is a gold ring on top, that'd be a money cowrie, but I'm betting that's not it.

strawberry cowries get “shaggy” like that…
they’re not reefsafe, but they are beautiful!

I’ve seen shagginess at this level.

but op has a full on Kenya tree situation going on in the back!

Might be a money cowrie.

It's definitely not a money / gold ring cowrie

Cowries are really cool but they aren't always coral safe

However 1 cowrie isn't likely to wipe out your corals either

Can you get a video of it moving or describe how it moves around? Like some nudibranchs and other sea slugs can stretch their whole bodies out pretty far but a snail with a mantle over its hard shell is going to be limited in its body shape when traveling.

Here’s a video I took of it up close. It’s roughly 1-1.5 inches across and appears to have a shell. Out of all of the guesses here it looks like the closest match would be some kind of cowrie but I’m not sure.

Closest I could find was pacific deer cowry:

poke it, it's definitely a cowrie, the shell will tell you what type it is.
