My blue throat trigger ("Tank" as my 5 year old daughter named him) went carpet surfing while I was at work and while my wife was upstairs with the kids.

I came home to a hysterically crying 5 year old, a stressed out wife, a confused 2 year old, and one dead fish. Very sad night in the house :(

Ah man I am very sorry to hear that. It is rough to go through this alone but to have little ones who cared about the fish and seeing it like that is on another level. How are they doing now? Have a talk with your daughter yet about this or are you planning on getting another fish that she can choose?

She's doing okay now. We talked a bit before she went to bed. She's very upset, but she's excited about getting Tank's "brother" at the LFS this weekend. I called my LFS and they confirmed they have two available for sale!

That's awesome she is doing better. Going to let her pick which of the brothers comes home? Or both?

BRS sells a DYI screen top not glass. Works wonders!

I just ordered a lid from ClearView Lids, I've heard great things about them.

We are going to get his brother since one of the triggers is a female. My daughter told me his name should be Taco.

I just feel so dang bad she had to witness that. She found him on the floor along with my wife and 2 year old (who doesn't really understand what happened). Thankfully, Daniel Tiger did an episode on his fish dying not too long ago, so it was a bit easier to explain what happened. Still a very rough night.

Yes, unfortunately some folks keep perpetuating the myth of the concept of Jumpers vs Non-Jumpers when in fact the correct terms are More Prone vs Less Prone. To me no amount of aesthetics of an open top tank beats even a single dead fish. Literally just an hour ago my top saved my Blue Star Leopard Wrasse from Carpet Surfing. An uncovered marine tank with fish is just an accident waiting to happen.

Learned my lesson this week as well... Bi-mac Anthias decided to bail out over the weekend.... :(

That's not a fun experience. We take on a big responsibility when we purchase live animals and invest a lot of money, time and effort caring for our fish and corals and it's painful when things like this happen. Good on you to learn from the experience. Best of luck.

I had this problem :( my beautiful female clownfish of 4 years jamp out when I was in work. Couldn’t find her anywhere in tank, then I looked down and ..... :( My heart absolutely broke. Hard lesson learnt, it’ll be a lid on tank forever for me now!

My heart sank that day. Lesson learnt the hard way, lid on tank from now on for me! RIP clowny :(

About 3 or 4 years ago I went into my living room was looking at the tank, then for some unknown reason I looked at the floor and there was a green chromis laying motionless on the floor, I almost stepped on him. I picked him up, put him back in the tank, after a few seconds he swam away. Boy was that a lucky coincidence, I still have that fish and I also have a top on that tank now.

Losses are never good news in this hobby. I have ysed glass tops and swear by them. While screens are great, they do not prevent splash and potential rust and oxidation to components. Glass also sliws down condensation and allows lights to be placed on top of them without sagging.

That lid may take awhile. You may want to hold off adding a new fish til it arrives.

Rusts not if you get netting or Fiberglas there are different types of screens out there. But just curious he would you want to put your lights on your glass

Sorry about your trigger. For a quick fix while your top is being made you could use egg crate light diffuser from Home Depot. Ugly but effective!
