Hi R2R,

I posted this in the soft corals forum but am reposting here hoping for some insight. :

(Previous post):

I have posted this in other forums but maybe someone here will have some insight. I have a biocube 32 softy tank. 3 toadstool, 2 nepthea, sinularia, devils hand. Papaya coral, pineapple coral. Some polyps. 4 fish. Over a month ago everything in the tank closed up and started shedding (well not the zoas). The sinularia and nepthea pretty much returned to normal but all toadstools, the devils hand and the papya coral have not opened back up consistently. They will polyp out for an hour or maybe a whole day then shed again. Water parameters have been unchanged. I've tried massive water changes and even changed out the sand (we moved). I added a powerhead to vary the flow. The only thing I haven't changed is the light, which is a kessil 160. It could be too weak, but it was ok for several months prior to this. Any thoughts?

Hoping someone can help.

(End of previous post)

Alk usually hovers around 8, Mg 1300, Ca 450ish. The only parameters that have changed recently have been a stark drop in rates and phos; we moved and I changed the sand. ( used to be NO3 50 now 10, PO4 was .16 now .10) But the change in chemistry didn't make a difference anyway.

Since the previous post I upgraded to a Kessil 360. The increased light seemed like it was going to help at first but then nothing.

This has been going on for a couple of months. Nothing seems to have died....yet :(

The last thing I can think of is chemical warfare though I've tried quadrupling my carbon with zero result. It's all soft corals: leathers, mushrooms and zoas. A couple grandis palys.

I really hope someone can help. I am getting very frustrated.

Cindy

A month does sound long, is anything in the tank irritating them? Vermitids?
Are you running any gac?

The toadstool in the back right corner is the only one that really seems bad off. The rest just look like they are constantly shedding.

I’m at a loss here. Added more lighting. Carbon. Flow.

Corraline is normal?

You could try purigen rather than carbon but....

Where does your rodi come from?

Coraline is normal, except for a small amount of color change immediately after our move. Its just already come back to mostly normal.

I make RODI. TDS is zero and I'm pretty anal about checking it every time I make batch. I even checked for chloramines in our old city water....nada.

I used to have Chemipure Elite in there. Changed it out for GAC and GFO. Still no change. I've never tried Purigen, do you thinkthat it would be different?

Purigen is a formula that attracts organics , like gfo and poly pad attracts metals and phosphates. Carbon is similar to purigen in that way. An actual expert reccomeded it over carbon when he spoke to our club on coral toxins.

I’m trying to think of some of the leather experts on R2r or who’s dealt with this.

Question , after a large water change like 10-15 gal, is there any change?

It sounds like the purigen would definitely be worth a try then. I'll pick that up tomorrow too.

Large water changes don't seem to have any effect. Even changing the sand didnt help!

If the large water changes didn’t do much , I’m not sure I’d bet on it being a toxin.

Geez. Stumper.

Like Katrina said , it can take some time. They are the grumpiest corals ever.
