LeeMar Aquariums

Peter, I'm curious as to how you plumbed that overflow, do you have pics? Asking because my next tank will have an internal yet horizontal overflow like yours..but trying to figure out how to plumb it so that it's very silent, since it will be in my living room. Thanks for any pics or info you can provide.

I just did two 1.5" bulkheads horizontally. Open top tee's attach to these. the 1.5" dual drains go down to a Y and join, since I have pretty low flow through my drains. And then into the sump. Simple design, but I'm not sure it's the quitest. My tank isn't silent, so I don't pay much attention to the drain noise, if there even is any, at such low flow...

If I went with the external overflow option, how would the return hose be plumbed? I'm having a hard time imagining the return. Thanks.

Sorry if I got anyone worked up but as soon as I placed my order today my retailer came back and told me Lee-Mar does NOT offer external overflows anymore. He said his rep screwed up, but we all know how that goes.

Anyways, it looks like I'm going to be going with an internal horizontal overflow.

Here's what I was thinking:

Tank is going to be 24" x 18" x 20"

Going to have the overflow be 8" long (but how deep?) and have 3 holes drilled in the back of the tank within the overflow. 2 1/2" holes for overflow and 1 1/2" hole for return (or should I go with 3/4" return?). What do you guys think? Any pics or advice would be great.

What are the dimensions of your overflow? and how do you have the return plumbed?

The return? It just comes up behind the back of the tank, and attaches to a bulkhead in the eurobracing. Obviously if you want the tank visible from all sides, due to the plumbing of the drains and the return, an internal horizontal overflow would not be ideal for you.

I forget what the overflow dims are, but I remember LeeMar actually had a suggested size, so I just went with that.

Yikes! Those are massive holes for such a small tank! My 150g has two 1.5" drains and one 1" return. Honestly, he return could easily have been 3/4", and the drains are PLENTY.

Hey that tank looks familiar lol...

They did a horizontal internal for me. Not sure about external. I think a local had one done...memory fails me now...I'll have to find out.

Edit: Nope... the one I was thinking of was also internal...

Well, I definitely want to have 2 holes for safety reasons. I'm actually thinking about going with a 36" tank now. Do you think a 1/2" return is enough for a tank that size? or should i go with 3/4" return?

for the 36" tank I was thinking the overflow would be 18" long x 3" deep x 4" tall

looking for any and all suggestions, just want to keep the overflow small and as low profile as possible (since i can't get a **** external!)

I was talking more about the drain lines. 2.5" is HUGE.

You are going to need larger than that. Most people use 1.5" drains. Maybe 1" on smaller tanks. Most people also simply use more 1.5" drains, rather than a single larger diameter, unless you are getting into REALLY big tanks.

Thanks for the advice, I really do appreciate it. What would you use on a 60g tank? 1" drain and 3/4" return? or 2 drains?

depends on what type of corals, sps go with 1.5" softies and lps go with 1" definately go with 3/4" return if not 1" can always use reducer if wanted

Oh I'm definitely going SPS on this one. 1.5" drain and 3/4" return it is. Thank you guys for the help. Look forward to getting this one started!

Actually, it simply depends on what gph you plan to run through your overflow and sump.

if going sps i would go with 1" returns and use a reducer if need be, i am having a age tank built because the external overflow and it will have 2x1.5 drains and 2x1" returns.
