Filter socks!

Let’s chat, how often do you change them?
How often do you completely replace them?
What do you do for cleaning if you reuse them?
how many do you use?
What are your thoughts on leaving one in for month or so at a time?

I currently run one until I see some particulates in my DT. I’m looking to stop doing this. I want to rotate socks since I only use one at a time? Not sure how to clean them, I’ve heard washing machine but do you just put them in with nothing? Bleach? Just food for thought, what’s everyone else doing?

+ for no socks. Recently switched from socks to cups and filter floss. No regrets.

-2-3 days (I run 100 Micron)
-Haven't had to. Been a year.
-I put them inside out, and wash them in hot water/bleach in washing machine.
-I have about 10.
-You're crazy.

I tried filter floss in a cup, didn't seem to polish the water nearly as much.

I don't see where he's polling who uses them or not...

- For me they last 2-4 days
- I have some that are at least 5 years old, I only replace them when they start to rip or the plastic ring starts to break
- I have a dedicated washing machine in my fish room, they go through a triple wash. Inside out with bleach, turned right side with bleach and finally right side without bleach.
- I probably have 30 or so
- I think that it would clog and overflow before a months time.

Does the dedicated washer smell or do you just have one because you were getting a new one anyway?

I use mesh style and triple 7". So easy to clean (hand rinse) and about 5 minutes to clean all 3. Don't know why I messed with cotton all these years.

I got tired of cleaning mine every few days. I pulled them out 2 weeks ago. So far, I'm a happier reefer.

I do have filter cups and picked up a bag of floss a few days ago. Still haven't implemented this though and have no mechanical filtration at the moment. Tank looks as clear as it did while I was running socks.

Here's the floss I picked up at my local Walmart. Pretty sure this is the floss most people use. But I could be totally wrong on this. Wouldn't be the first time i was wrong about something.

Mine came from BRS. I got them at Buy 2 get 1 free. Have 9 total

For us, It was a must, in the past, we used to itch all the time and accredit it to washing the socks...

I always run a cleaning cycle after I wash my socks. With either bleach or a few soap pods.

Typically I do not like socks but have one sump that is prohibitive on floss so...
how often do you change them? Once per week
How often do you completely replace them? When I see material starting to wear
What do you do for cleaning if you reuse them? 1/2 bleach and washing machine with extra rinse
how many do you use? Sump uses one large 7" rectangular sock. I keep one for rotation and one extra on hand
What are your thoughts on leaving one in for month or so at a time? No, biological waste build up from reef food is too much IMO.
