Its just a plastic cup that slides into the filter sock hole. Then you put filter floss in it. It's easier because you can just toss it and stick more in every day or two... I just found it doesn't polish the water as good.

I have a sock on my tank, but only because without the sock the sump makes more noise than I want (Reefer 350). I may get a second cup to replace the sock, as i'm really not find of socks unless, as others have said, I'm doing something that's stirring up larger particles. Rather than trying to artificially remove large organics, I prefer to let my detrivore crew build up to process what the tank creates. My tanks have always looked best with minimal mechanical filtration.
