Can someone show me a picture of a male and female Ornate leopard wrasse?

I had forgotten how small the range is. I've always assumed the apparent purple/maroon variation was variation in photography, but I wasn't sure. All the specimens I've personally seen of the species I would describe as purple rather than red or maroon.

I understand how the purple could appear maroon, but does the stripe behind the pectoral fin appear more yellow or pink in person?

Certainly yellow; Tanaka's photo is washed out.

I've kept this species in the past, and the colors stayed nice and saturated too.

Would you say it appears more like this?

Here was mine, from what seems like an eternity ago:

evolved Thanks Hunter.

In a 120g, do you see any issues with the following fairy wrasses?

luteovittatus
beauperryi
exquisitus (Vanuatu)
lubbocki
laboutei
rhomboidalis
lineatus OR cf. lanceolatus OR lunatus OR johnsoni
nahackyi OR bathypilus (preferably Vanuatu)

My pleasure. Comments below:

luteovittatus
beauperryi - typically dulls out in coloration
exquisitus (Vanuatu)
lubbocki
laboutei - may become too dominant with maturity
rhomboidalis
lineatus OR cf. lanceolatus OR lunatus OR johnsoni - the OR is important on the pintail, lunatus, and johnsoni as they'll squabble amongst each other. Lineatus is off in a completely different branch.
nahackyi OR bathypilus (preferably Vanuatu)- both are great, but I'm partial to nahackyi

Could this be counteracted by adding it last or should I avoid it altogether?

How much do juvi/female nahackyi currently go for?

Ornate wrasses sport far more color than the above photos, although that does depict the markings.

Ornate leopards have green and red hues, here is an example:

Female (What mine looks like)

I think those are the holotypes, so they are faded.

Makes sense. Just doesn't flatter the species much! I think ornate are beautiful!

It's more of a matter of an individual's attitude than order addition with laboutei. Not all get aggressive with age, but it is a risk.

Nahackyi are a bit more expensive than bathyphilus, but the bigger issue is I haven't seen any available for a couple years.

Rather a transitional male.

Precisely :)

OK sir, what was this wrasse? (Scientific and regular name)

They had it completely incorrect at LFS. It committed suicide during a water change and went unnoticed, but it was a stunner (poor photo though)

I truly have no idea what it was, I think I looked it up at one point but I could not find a definitive answer

Coris venusta, the elegant wrasse. A Hawaiian endemic. It stays small for a Coris.

Yep that's exactly what I called it as well after research now that you mention it! The LFS sold it to me as something really stupid like a lunare wrasse - which I knew it most certainly was not.

I didn't argue, what does a beautiful elegant wrasse fetch for price-wise?

I am real upset that i lost her though :(

Whenever I see them they are usually in the $75-90 range.

Makes me feel better about the 29.99 or 34.99 I paid I cannot remember which. Wish I hadn't let her leap out.
