Yep, it's H. melanurus, transitioning into a male, you can tell by the pattern on the caudal fin.

Thanks! I am slowly getting better with Halichoeres ID's![]()
Yup, 1st is scott's and 2nd is exquiste, looks like from Australia, but could be from adjacent Coral Sea.
Sorry to get off topic but what's that other fish? It's stunning!
There's some potential for the coloration to improve a lot, but most likely it'll get just a bit better. Its C. rubripinnis, the colors will get a little more distinct, but this one is already a male so not too much more of a change.
Yeah, it's certainly C. filamentosus. It's not all that uncommon for them to get the dark "cap" that one has; but not the norm.C. filamentosus, whipfin fairy. C. tonozukai has a "hooded" appearance.
Agree; there's always subtle cues on the juvi Halichoeres, but it takes a clear photo to see them.Yep, it's H. melanurus, transitioning into a male, you can tell by the pattern on the caudal fin.
Yup.It Is a female Macropharyngodon ornatus.
