Was sold as female flame wrasse, but does not look like other female flames I've seen. The male is def a flame but they were sold as a pair but in different bags I do not think they were a true pair....

Maybe a C rubripinnus Red Fin Fairy Wrasse

I agree though it doesn't look like a female flame.

Agreed. It is a male C. rubripinnis.

It looks like a juvenile male flame.

There is no such thing. A wrasse begins life as a juvenile, then transitions to female, then transitions to a male.

This isn't mine. It was shipped as a flame wrasse but I think it's a female flasher wrasse. Maybe McKoskers female.

The fish in question is a male C. rubripinnis, not a female flame, nor a Paracheilinus species.

I've seen that fish listed as a red flasher so many times.

As have I, as well as filamentosus listed as a flasher... :cringe:
Lots of mis-labeled wrasses are sold, when it comes to the cheap ones at least.

That one was sold as a flame. So it was a cheap in place of a pricey one. I'm not sure what's going to happen with it.

The wholesalers sell them as assorted wrasses mixed in with Mccoskers and carpenters etc.....

I believe with the ornate the males just have a little darker coloration, the change isn't as drastic as some of the other leopards.

Coloration a bit, but mostly by patterns (Potter's are also this way). Yours is a female.

Note the pattern on the body, but specifically the pattern in the dorsal/anal fins.

As well as the facial markings, the smaller spotting on the lower jaw of the females becomes longer and more drawn out as it matures.

That is a male Halichoeres leucurus. It is a species that buries at night and when frightened so sand is a better substrate than a courser grade, as a substrate of too large a grain size can cause damage to a sand burying species.
