Looks like a pylei to me.

Zac

I was going to post a pic of an unknown wrasse I picked up today because the owner thought it was an Anampses sp, because he couldn't figure out what it was and it had the yellow band on the tail. Turns out, it is a subadult Chiseltooth Wrasse with some blue still on it. She's acclimating very unhappily in the box for now.

My latest acquisition. I know the genus, but can't find the species. A little help?

+1 to the pylei

Are the cf versions more common of a few wrasses like the pylei and Cyanopleura?
Cyanopleura is just as common as cf. cyanopleura, cf. pylei is waaay more common than the true pylei.

I think this is an underappreciated species.

Doliatus rhodonotus.

I searched the forum and could find only around 7 or 8 hits on the Chiseltooth. I don't think I got this one for a deal, but I don't see it available hardly anywhere so i am glad we found it. It is stunningly beautiful with the blue on it now, as well as the yellow band and the black tail tip.

This is the one I was thinking could be half solarensis and half cf. cyanopleura. Got him the same day as a rubyhead at the same shop. He is the second pic. Both are definitely males behavior wise.

It's a cf. cyanopleura, not a hybrid.

Both? Even with differences in coloration and patterning? The first male has the blue jawline and the other does not. Those are two different fish in the photos.

One is just further developed, you can see thw blue developing on the second one as well.

Doliatus rhodonotus.
Oh wow. I thought it was a Pseudojuloides sp., and LFS told me it was a pencil wrasse as well. Are they similar in behavior/feeding?

I was worried they wouldn't be compatible but they are. Now it is to the point in the evening where the chasing and flashing begins before bed. The most enjoyable part of having these fish.

That Doliatus is listed as Hologymnosus rhodonotus in the latest Kuiter book.
Yeah, don't have that book but I just googled Doliatus rhodonotus and all that comes up is Hologymnosus species. The picture of a juvenile H. doliatus on Reefkeeping.com looks different though. Ssme shape and longitudinal stripes but a silvery body and stripes are red, vs. white with orange -to-yellow stripes.
