Soft Coral only here but then I do only have a 13.5 gallon tank. With all the rock and coral there isn’t much swimming space or water volume left. Even without all that I personally feel the tank would be too small for fish. I drip everything for 90 minutes as that’s what the place I buy from says to do, never actually questioned it.

theory is that ammonia builds quickly in a bag of fish or snails so its nest to just get em out. the coral is going to take a harsh bath in poison so imo that drip is pointless too.

I’d urge you looked into them a bit more...

Albeit anecdotal;
I have a sizeable unit on my system with plans to add more. Currently running 80 watts - adding another 40 watt unit soon. I have absolutely seen a reduction in algae as well as parasites. Before the sterilizer a few fish would constantly have small cycles of ich. With increased feedings and the addition of the sterilizer these went away completely. I haven’t seen a single spot since. Im sure I still have some amount of ‘hostile’ organisms but it surely seems less than before. I think the main reasons people fail with sterilizers are because they either buy too small of a unit, don’t maintain it properly, or don’t have a proper flow rate.

Depends entirely on your goal with them. They are effective at killing or weaking water column bacteria.

Just dropping the fish in the tank . Depends on where are the fish/coral/inverts coming from. If they are coming from my LFS then my water and their water is almost the same. If they are coming from an online vendor then you should drip acclimate.

the decision to quarantine live stock is all a matter of circumstances. If you live in NYC
And you live in a 900sqf apt then having a quarantine system doesn’t make sense.
if you live in the suburbs and have a fish room or a large tank then quarantine makes more sense for that person.

Most LFS in NYC already know that their clients don’t have time or room to quarantine fish or corals so the store does it for them. The stores also cater to smaller nano systems. With smaller fish.

I started this hobby for the fish but now the fish are only there to clean my corals. Lol

Finding reasons to not spend the money to not install a piece of equipment onto your system that may or may not be helpful ,, are easy ,, reasons for not QT that fish or dipping that coral ,, taking that free or almost free frag from that local reefer,, who may or may not have a healthy system ,, I have been doing it this way for years ,, not using RO/DI water ,, no problems here

I QT everything. I guess with a smaller tank if you have a problem ... Ummm Maybe no big deal...Try getting a sick fish out of a 240 gal tank .... Ummm not so easy... Small tank things go bad... Your lose is minimal..... Big Tank... Big Trouble... I will always QT everything that goes into my DT.... Just Me...

but now with a 220G tank there no tearing it down if something happens, so I’d rather do my due diligence and prevent what I can.
All fish are sourced from TSM Aquatics and go through their QT procedures. All corals/inverts gets a 76 day QT in the coral QT.

My first 3 fish in the new tank cost more than my entire 28G tank , that’s too much to risk

if i planned on expensive fish or even a large community of fish i would be right there with you. not quarentineing coral in any system is foolish considering you can do it in a tiny tank with a little bit of flow and a cheap light

The only fish I have ever acclimated beyond floating the bag were fish I caught myself for a Florida FOWLR. That was because I kept the tank at 1.025 and the intracoastal and shore can be as low as 1.008, depending on the tide and rainfall, etc. Even then, a couple times I was in a hurry and just plopped them in there. They all survived.

So ive been doing this for a long time... well 8 years.

i stopped quarentining fish because im not a fish guy, keep small tanks and hardy fish. how many people are in this for the coral?

to me fish are just kind of a byproduct of the environment. i usually have couple clowns and a goby or something.

i do however qt and dip all my coral but i never ever acclimate, except for an anemone. not fish, not coral, not snails, nothing. only to temp and in they go.

is this becoming common practice or is everybody still dripping everything?

are you into the fish coral or both?

do you qt every single thing or just one thing or nothing?

what do you do that somebody else would find unconventional?

I’ve never quarantined any fish in my 200 gallon reef. I do dip my corals. My tank is 2 1/2 yrs.

At this time I would say coral my tank is only 15 gallons and I have a very simple filtration system but many small life in the tank not perfect but not bad.

just added a yellow prawn goby last friday i got my SA Clownfish. two extreme whites(gladiator/davinci) and an iced mocha. one of the whites was a freebie so ill be setting up another tank soon for it lol

I buy my fish and coral from only three LFS I have been going to for many years. Fish I only buy from coral or display tanks at the LFS. I still drip the fish 45 min or so. Corals and nems I float 15 min and then drop them in. I have 19 fish, most I have had for several years.

LOL! I was just thinking about the same thing. I think of my fish as pets. Ok I am strange I guess....I even think that way about my nems.... especially when I feed them with my hands and they don't sting me. LOL!
