let's see your prop tanks..

Thanks ! Well yeah we all crave Zoas over here but we struggle to get nice ones hence my attempts to boost the UK population.
If any of you guys are willing to send me some nice frags over then ill gladly pay you well over US prices for them !

PM me if anyone can help out please. Perhaps best to add that this is a hobby for me not a business. I am an Engineer by trade hence all the fancy gadgetry :) if anyone wants help with wiring or tech stuff then feel free to PM me.

awesome setup rich. you dont get tired of going up and down that ladder though

but right now i'm not sure if I should get rid of my sandbed....I don't think it's doing any good....it's fairly shallow (1" to 2" at the most)...

anyone have any comments re: a shallow sandbed in a prop tank? is there any benefit?

Zach

Hi Zach

I think it is important to have some substrate to stablise the PH during lights off period. My substrate is in the sump so it leaves my frag tanks clear of crud and sand blowing around.

the sandbed won't provide much help stabilizing the pH when compared to other methods of stabilizing pH when the main lights go off; I maintain a reverse photoperiod....when the main lights go off, the refugium lights turn on, this goes for both my systems (frag and display)....that way i'm able to maintian my pH at ~8.1 without any prob.

in any case, I installed a new eggcrate configuration in the frag system this weekend and I KEPT the sandbed....after discussing with my close buddy, and drinking some of the very dark rum in my picture above, I figured it was too much work to remove it......so I bought a pile of hermits, and a sand-sifting star...we'll see how it pans out :)

Hi again

Yes i utilise the reverse photoperiod method for my display tank as the sump is in a seperate room to the display.
As my sump is situated in the same room as my frag tanks i have ran the sump lighting along with the main lights to ensure that the corals get a proper lights off period.
Aragonite sand will slowly dissolve if the PH rises and therefore stabilse the Ph. I guess it has to rise for that to happen though so essentially you are correct. I guess some sand has got to be better than no sand tohelp to reduce ph swings.

:D Oh - nice tank ! :)
