Let's see your T5 SPS tanks!

I don't currently use actinics. But, I know a lot of people still do. IMO you can't go wrong with the ATI True Actinic.

all beautiful tanks guys/girls. i would say the led tech is here, its the price that is not. On my nano i had a 54watt over lps and spa and the color was great, especially the actinic led vs t5 actinics= no comparison. When i upgraded i choose a halide t5 fixture mainly because i can get the same results as leds for half the price up front, and i really don't use actinics a lot anyway.Either way you will get great results.

Standard 90 gallon, 48" 8 bulb ATI dimmable unit. 5 Blue+, 2 Coral+ and an ati True actinic. Photos of sps taken later in the day when the light is more blue.

Here's some photos of my tank. 6x84 sunpower with 4 b+ and 2 coral+

Please note my tank is recovering. Had issues with dinos a few months back. Lost a bunch of fish, the few acro colonies I had, and everything
else browned out.

ATI Sunpower 8X80W with BuildMyLED XB actinic strip. Take about 30-60 PAR without the LED strip.
10" above water:

6" above water:

6" with 2 month old bulbs will burn some corals on the 24" sandbed.

Overdriving the bulbs produces a lot more par & as mentioned they only last about 6 months versus 12.

I get about 200 more par when measured with a par meter just under a single bulb vs an ATI ballast.

The blue+ bulbs will run a little less blue but it's almost un-noticable visually and my tank will look a tad brighter. I don't know if the secptrum is much different.

The overdriven bulbs/ballasts are making a slight resurgence because VHO is going away and people with deep tanks that were using VHO supplementing can transition to T5. If you haven't noticed Coralvue has re-introduced the 660 ballast and also the DIY kits are available.

What par # are you looking for for the majority of your sticks? I have a 16" tall 80g being added to my frag setup where I already have an 80g with 2 Radiums and 4 t5s. Second tank will be an 8 bulb ATI fixture. I could get crazy par on my current setup but feel I was blasting the corals and really had to raise the combo fixture up.

The range I target is between 250-450. Up to 550 is ok but only certain Acros will tolerate that. I like the deep vivid colors, versus pastel.

300-350 is the sweet spot range......Most will have good color

Millis color best at the higher levels

Smooth skin acros can do very well in the250 range.

I run the lights 8 hours a day, all on/all off.

Here's the par numbers I was getting in my 75g----

The lights are 6 1/2" from the surface and total water depth is 18 1/2". The first number is the level from the floor of the tank. The number in ( ) is the distance from the bulbs.

1" off the bottom-- 200 (24)

3"- 260 (22)

6"- 280 (19)

10"- 300 (15) This is mid level area of the tank.

11"- 325 (14)

12"- 360 (13)

13"- 400 (12)

14"- 430 (11)

15"- 470 (10)

17"- 500 (8)

80g rimless current tank – light 8.25” from water surface

5” off bottom- 300
---------------------------------
You're 8 bulb fixture will be plenty.

I like overdriving my t5s but sometimes I will get a bulb that only lasts 1 month and burns out. It seems to happen with ati the most, giesman didn't go as quick but I didn't like their color options. I like overdriving my bulbs along with using a regular ballast on two other bulbs because they burn a little different. Anyone have better luck overdriving something else without quick 1 month burn outs happening?

Hey BigE Just went through your RC build very nice and great information. I plan on adding your 4bulb combo to my system with some leds. I also have been looking for some useful par values with no luck (all I find is 500-800par) which I know is a bit much (I'm running a low nutrient system) Thanks again

Big E -- That's very helpful and I appreciate you taking the time. It reconfirms my thinking that the 300-350 range is my sweet spot. I've built some new multi level frag racks to accommodate for this lower target.
My Subpower 8bulb arrives tomorrow and I'll start getting the new tank plumbed into the sump. Going to use this as a guide. Think we have the same tanks.
Thanks again!!

I'm glad you found my thread useful........if you have any questions feel free to ask anytime.............this extends to anyone. I enjoy sharing a helping fellow reefers out whenever I can.

I just switched all my bulbs to only Blue+ and Actinics T5's in a 50/50 ratio. Anyone else try this before? What do you guys think will happen?
I know Cornbred does the same thing with only running blues and actinic LEDs.

Hey Cola.

I just switched out some bulbs and changed from purple+ to the actinic...here is my current combo...72" 12 bulb light, 6 on each side

Actinic
Blue+
Blue+
Coral+
Blue+
Blue+

Growth hasn't slowed down at all.
I might change out another set of Blue+ for Actinics. I change out 4 bulbs every four months, for budget and light acclimation reasons.

I've also been running more heavy on actinics and I love it. Corals seem more healthy. I now run:

Actinic
Blue+
Actinic
Blue+

Blue+
Purple+

I think it's a good balance of actinic to regular bulbs. I haven't noticed any negative impacts from the PAR reduction of running all blues/whites. Still growing acros at the bottom of the aquarium.

I thought about switching it up after watching these 2 vids

that has to be one of the nicest 75 gallon sps tanks I've ever seen what bulb combo are you using? also what method are you using to keep cal alk and mag up with all those beautiful acros eating it up and any other additives you use

Are the results good after 2 months?!
